Nowadays, educational content is not only something you can get through expensive courses, or from reading books. Information has become free, and easily accessible through various online platforms.

It should be no surprise that YouTube is an excellent platform for learning. You don’t need to pay anything to learn, you just need to be dedicated to watching the videos.

However, with 500 hours of new content being uploaded to YouTube every minute, we need to be very selective and careful with the videos we watch, such that they are not a waste of time and actually bring value.

In this article, I will share some of the best tech YouTube channels that I personally follow. Not only do they teach web development through great tutorials, but also share valuable information about what’s it like to work in the software industry.

Tutorial Based Channels

1. Traversy Media

Traversy Media, created by Brad Traversy in 2009, is one of the largest channels that teach web development through tutorial-based videos. His tutorials focus on web development-related technologies, like JavaScript libraries, front-end/back-end stacks, Linux, and hosting, etc.

However, just having great tutorials didn’t get him to 1.4 million subscribers. What made me subscribe to his channel is that he also talks about his personal experiences in the industry, careers in software, and developer mindsets.

He gives tips on freelancing and how to deal with struggles as a software developer. One of my favorite non-tutorial playlists is his “Developer Discussion” playlist.

Every year, he makes a comprehensive, hour-long video about the various existing web development stacks, and he points out a path to going from zero to full-stack. This is extremely valuable for experienced developers since the industry changes very fast. It’s crucial to stay connected to the industry and keep up with these new trends. If you are a beginner at web development, these videos can really point out a clear path for you to learn.

Recently, he started to bring on other tech YouTubers to talk about topics that he doesn’t usually cover. By watching this channel, not only will you learn about web development, but you also have a chance to check out other YouTubers that might interest you.

2. The NetNinja

The Net Ninja has over 650k subscribers, and shares tutorials that focus on full-stack web development. There are playlists about mainstream libraries like React and Node, front-end stacks like Bootstrap and Webpack, and back-end stacks like Firebase and Django.

His style is quick to the point and code along with his thoughts. This makes it really easy for the viewers to follow.

This channel has one of the best tutorials I’ve seen for React and TypeScript, they are clear and concise. He goes over all the important concepts and shows code examples along with them. He also keeps his content up to date, so you won’t be learning a 5-year old version of React.

This channel is great for anyone who is just starting to learn and wants to see the technology in action. It also has videos for mobile development like Flutter and React Native if you are interested.

3. Web Dev Simplified

The name says it all, this channel created by Kyle produces all kinds of videos related, but not limited to web development. With over 20 million views racked up in just 2 years, this channel explains a lot of complex concepts such as Express Middleware in a very straight-forward way.

Kyle has a very practical style when it comes to presenting information about technology. For beginners, there are two multi-hour courses that teach you how to create a full-stack web app from scratch: New Web Developer Starts Here and Full-stack Web Development Course.

For others, this channel has other related content like how to write clean code or SOLID design principles.

4. Code With Tim

Tim is a fellow Canadian tech YouTuber, who started his channel in 2014, and now has 570k subscribers with over 40 million views.

His channel’s main focus is Python, and everything Python-related. Although not the standard React, Vue, Angular channel that purely focuses on modern web technologies, this channel is great for anyone who wants to venture into the realm of Python and what’s possible with it.

For web developers, he has a great playlist on Django and Flask, as well as a full-stack development tutorial using Django & React. For people who might want to try something other than web dev, you can also find topics like Machine Learning, Neural Network, and PyGame, etc.

His channel also has the best selenium tutorial I’ve ever watched.

5. Fireship

If you like speed and don’t like to watch hours of tutorial videos, then you should definitely watch Fireship’s channel.

I got hooked when I came across his “100 seconds of code” playlist, where he goes over all kinds of topics ranging from Recursion, to CSS, to “What is THIS in JavaScript” to Vue.js, all under 2 minutes. It’s amazing how he can condense so much information into such a short video.

Of course, he has longer, and practical tutorial videos that show you how to use a technology like Firestore, or Docker.

His style is very concise and tries to deliver the maximum amount of value in the shortest amount of time. He won’t waste time showing you how to set up, and he goes over the implementation very fast, so you might need to rewind a couple of times to fully understand a topic.

But if you just want to know how to do something in under 15 minutes, definitely check out this channel!

Moving on to some other tech-industry focused channels

It’s not fun to always watch tutorials on how to implement something, and being a software developer goes way beyond that.

Getting to know the industry is important, so here is a list of some other channels that I personally watch, which talks about the industry as a whole, or their experiences as a developer.

6. Techlead Show

TechLead Show is TechLead’s second channel, where he shares his unfiltered opinions on various things that are happening inside, and outside of the technology industry.

TechLead was an ex-Google, ex-Facebook software engineer, and is known for his sarcasm and the overemphasize on “ex-Google, ex-Facebook Tech-lead” (and now as a millionaire).

Although his main channel is filled with mostly sarcastic (and entertaining) content, I find his second channel a lot enjoyable and valuable. He isn’t afraid to voice his own thoughts on controversial issues and shows a very interesting perspective on the matters that are related, or affecting the industry.

7. Clément Mihailescu

Clément was a software engineer from Google and Facebook, and he started a company of his own called AlgoExpert.io, which prepares people for coding interviews.

In his channel, he talks about his experiences from working at Google and Facebook, showcasing the architecture of his company, and general knowledge about coding interviews and software development.

For someone who is already working in a tech company, Clément has valuable videos like “How to communicate better as a software developer” and an entire Google playlist giving tips and sharing his own experience on how to interview, and excel at work.

Clément did not have a CS background when graduating from university, and he went to a Bootcamp to learn to code, and he shares some very useful knowledge for people who might be in the same situation.

8. Coder Foundry

Coder Foundry doesn’t have a lot of followers, but he gives out great tips with the pure focus of helping you with getting a software development job.

His channel has a wide range of topics including, but not limited to the following:

His main focus on the channel is C# and .Net, which actually is the first language I’ve ever used in a professional setting. Although I’m sure this is also for advertising his coding Bootcamp, which specializes in .NET stack, it also proves that they are still a relevant skill in the software industry and are worth learning.

In my opinion, his channel is very helpful for people who might want to switch careers into software development, or are looking for their first software job.

9. Joshua Fluke

Joshua Fluke has a very unique channel. His channel started off by reviewing resumes and portfolios submitted to him. Recently, he started to bring on guests such as other YouTubers or HR of a tech company, to give you a full critique of resumes. These videos can really help you to get a sense of what interviewers look for when finding a developer candidate.

He also dedicates a lot of time to go over software jobs in the market, and give them an honest review. He shows his audience how to find a good software job, educates viewers on their rights as someone who is looking for a job, and points out red flags in job postings.

Sometimes he would also record his call with a recruiter, to show what an actual interview looks like.

His videos are definitely helpful for people who are starting to find their first job.

10. Kalle Hallden

Kalle is a self-taught developer and has a very laid-back channel that focuses mainly on Python-related projects.

He doesn’t have many tutorial-based videos like other YouTubers I mentioned before, but his project ideas are awesome!

I often find myself just watching him building a trading bot, or automating Instagram, or creating a Rasberry Pi web server.

If you enjoy watching others code because you are a nerd like me, check out this channel with a cup of coffee in your hand!

There you go! These are my top list of YouTube channels that talk about software development from all different perspectives.

We’ve been blessed by platforms like YouTube, which makes valuable content free and available to us with just a laptop. I hope you can find this list helpful and can bring value to you!
