Kinds of Super Fruits Should YOU Eat? WHEN?
Timing is Everything
This is a continuation of my article on keeping your body healthy and also how to break your fast before you begin breakfast by squeezing a few drops of lemon juice in lukewarm water and then drinking it. I will link that article here. Some readers have commented that they use cider vinegar and also a dash of turmeric. Try that as well as they have their benefits too.
After drinking that concoction, it is good to begin with something solid. And, I mean with something natural. What better way than a bowl of fresh fruit. Our supermarkets bring us the best of fresh fruit all year round. So, no excuses to get them at any time of the year.
What I do is, I chop a variety of fresh fruit, maybe strawberries, grapes, blueberries or raspberries and also mix it up with honeydew melon, cantaloupe, orange, kiwi fruit, blackberries, pineapple and many others.
I am not particular. I just buy whatever is available and whatever is on sale. Yes, I like to save money too in these hard times of inflation. I sometimes even buy apples, nectarines, plums or pears and also different varieties of oranges and grapes. I don’t use all fruits at once. Just chop like three small fruits each night and keep them ready for the next morning as I don’t like eating them cold. Therefore, I chop and leave them covered in a bowl ready to eat the next morning after drinking some freshly squeezed lemon juice in tepid water.
I try and eat fruits that are superfruits (not superfoods) and rich in antioxidants. Now what are SUPERFRUITS? Atrium Health defines superfruits as fruits packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, nutrients and minerals that are beneficial for your health. They also help in preventing certain types of diseases. Healthline.com says that pomegranate, plums, mangoes, strawberries, apples, raspberries, grapefruit, blueberries, avocadoes, peaches, plums, cherries, figs, cherries, nectarines, kumquats, goji berries, cranberries, papayas, watermelons and acai berries are rich in vitamin c and antioxidants. I avoid pomegranates because, I don’t have the patience to peel them and also remove the flesh from the seeds. Kumquats and goji berries are expensive. And I don’t think I have ever seen acai berries in my store, unless they’re in a packet, which mean they aren’t fresh. Cranberries, I get them dried and use them for salads (again, not fresh). Avocados, I usually eat them if I have salads or if I have black bean soup for dinner. Figs and mangoes, I’ve tried them, but I usually use the remaining very frequently.
Watermelons I use them in the summer months as they are only available then; cherries too. Only in some rare circumstances do you get cherries in the winter months. I don’t know where my store gets them from, but I have seen them once or twice in December. Here is a chart, which shows the other benefits of each superfruit and their benefits. So, make sure that you add them to your salad bowl. Bananas, I eat one before I go to the gym instead of wasting money on pre-workout, which is expensive and someone I know gets terrible acne taking that.

Some studies say that eating fruits during or after meals is okay. Others say before is okay. Those who favor eating fruits before meals complain that eating fruit during and after meals causes bloating and gas not to mention that the body does not absorb all the nutrients that the fruits have to offer because of the acidic environment created by the stomach acids already digesting the food in there. All of you obviously know that the stomach acids aid in digesting the foods we eat.
But here’s where one has to use their God given brain. Okay, so when you wake up in the morning, you’re hungry having not eaten for 6 to 8 or even 9 hours since you were asleep. If you did what I wrote in my first article about drinking some freshly squeezed lemon juice in warm water, then that is the only source of nutrition that you will have had, and that is only just a little lemon juice in water, which will quickly be absorbed by the digestive system. Therefore, the body will be back to craving food. Then, if you want your body to get the maximum benefit of the fruits and its natural nutrients, I think it is better to eat the bowl of fruits at this time. Because once you eat cereal, drink coffee, juices and even milk, which has all gone through various stages of artificial processing in a processing facility you are not getting the proper benefits of these processed foods. And, don’t forget there are additives and chemical preservatives present in them to improve shelf life.
In the end, do whatever works best for you. We have free will and not everyone is meant to follow the status quo as it does not always work for them. Some are meant to find an alternate path to walk on throughout their life. But in the end, we all have one body and we are responsible for taking care of it and improving our own quality of life. That alone lies with us.
After you have had your fruit salad, have cereal, coffee, eggs, toast and anything else you’d like to have for breakfast.
