Benefits of Buying Travel Insurance
It’s just a waste of money — until you need it.
The ability to travel and see the world is one of the great experiences of life. This vast world has so much to offer and, let’s face it, our time on this planet is limited. The best time to “Live Large” (my mantra for life) is right now! Many people like vacation packages for their travels. It’s easy to see why. Someone else (far more professional and experienced at travel than I am) can put together an itinerary that will knock my socks off. I often like relying on the expertise of others. Cutting ”unnecessary” expenses in the planning and executing of the trip can mean more cash to spend at your destination on things that make your travel adventure fun and exciting. “Unnecessary” is a term defined on an individual basis.
One optional travel expense you may be tempted to eliminate from your travel plans in order to save some more money for the fun parts of your trip is travel insurance.
You aren’t expecting anything to go wrong so why would you want to throw money at a problem you don’t expect to have?
I get that. If I’m planning for fun, I’m definitely not planning for disaster.
Travel insurance is simply throwing money into a black hole and kissing it good-bye — Until the day (almost inevitable if you do enough traveling) when you need that protection to save your vacation and maybe even protect you from financial distress.
I am not a travel professional, so I don’t have any skin in the game by encouraging you to buy travel insurance.
I am an avid traveler, so I am willing to share with you what I consider to be the potential (inevitable) benefits of protecting your travel experience investment. Travel insurance can compensate you for the loses you would otherwise incur if your trip is canceled or delayed for reasons beyond your control. These issues may be a lot more prevalent than you think. Weather conditions are unpredictable and uncontrollable. Touring companies and travel agencies may be less than reputable or may go out of business unexpectedly. Transportation and the associated connections may not always align as expected. The world is a crazy place — political unrest or government overthrows are not necessarily out of the question. If, and when, such a catastrophe should occur, what are you going to do?
Travel insurance can come to the rescue if you or your traveling companions become ill or are the victim of an accident and require medical attention. You should always check with your personal medical coverage to see what it covers if you leave the state or the country and need medical assistance. Travel insurance can come to your aid to fill in the missing gaps in your regular medical coverage.
Travel insurance can offer a level of protection if your personal life gets in the way of your upcoming trip. Family crises, unexpected personal issues or a sudden change in the health of you or your loved ones can appear without warning. No insurance? No refund or recovery. It’s as simple as that. If your travel is interrupted after your trip is already in progress, travel insurance may pay the cost of getting you home quickly, should the need arise.
If you should happen to run afoul of the law while vacationing abroad, the right travel insurance may provide you with a means to deal with your unexpected legal expenses. Don’t expect a whole lot of mileage from your insurance on this one, but it may help you get on your feet until you can connect with the proper authorities back home.
Missing, lost or stolen luggage is every traveler’s worst nightmare — and one that is unbelievably common. Don’t let it ruin your otherwise perfect trip. The proper travel insurance can help you purchase whatever you need to keep body and soul together until your luggage is found or you can replace the basic necessities. This also applies to protecting your travel documents, cash or credit cards. To be safe, always notify your bank and credit card company as soon as you realize you are missing vital documents.
The laws of probability suggest that the more you travel, the greater the chance that you will encounter a travel nightmare. Try as you might, you cannot pre-plan perfection every single time you travel. The cost of travel insurance for every vacation you ever take in your lifetime could be offset by just one catastrophic event. Don’t be penny-wise and pound-foolish (an ancient cliché that is as relevant today as it ever was) when it comes to protecting your next treasured vacation.
