Benefits of Being Blind to What Others See

Unusual powers of the prophet and visionary

A prophet is not someone with special visions, just someone blind to most of what others see. ~Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Before I begin, read that quote again. . . . .

A prophet is not someone with special visions, just someone blind to most of what others see.

~Nassim Nicholas Taleb

I had to read it a couple of times. I have to say that I might be misunderstanding this quote as I found it as a standalone quote in Goodreads, and not in the context of Taleb’s writing. I have read some of his works and he is fascinating, but again, I am not familiar with his frame for this quote.

That being said, I wonder at his meaning.

We usually think of a prophet as one who does have visions. I think, in this case, that Taleb uses the word prophet also for visionary.

I am intrigued by this concept of blindness for the prophet and visionary. There are so many things (physical and otherwise) we tend to see that actually get in our way of seeing bigger things, more important things, even mystical and “prophetic” things.

These things create blind spots that the prophet or the intuitive ignores, possibly due to a willful blindness. They often choose NOT to see what the ordinary person sees.

Blind spots work both ways. We typically think of blind spots as an area where a person’s view is obstructed. A blind spot inhibits sight, but in Taleb’s view, it also allows for a different sight.

Maybe we need to develop some blind spots so that we can focus on what we need to! Maybe closing our “physical” eyes so that we can activate our inner eye, our third eye of intuition.

From an Old Soul Alchemy standpoint, I’d have to say that the prophet/intuitive purposely and purposefully turns a blind eye to externals so he/she can focus and develop trust in inner sight!

What do you think?

Runa Heilung is the founder of Old Soul Alchemy. She has developed a practice of “Imagination as Meditation: For Relaxation, Illumination, and Meditation.” Her calling is not only to listen to her Inner Wisdom but also to help others rediscover their own Inner Wisdom.
