Being Taught Through Love
Life mottoes and other tales

I love reading books and there are some books that speak directly to my soul. When Joe Merkle tagged me in his article about life mottoes I knew I would have a hard time coming up with a proper post of my own.
Joe already talked about Richard Bach, who is also one of my favorite authors. I re-read parts of his books regularly (or, when I need to). My copy of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” is one of my most precious possessions. It was a gift from my father for my 14th birthday, but that’s not the only reason why it’s special. It’s an edition that has black and white photos of seagulls in between the pages. It’s amazing.
My father has a big collection of old, hardcover books, so as a child I would always grab a book to read. He was okay with it, and he had warned me about which books I should read when I got a bit older. The books of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy were in that “category”.
I started reading from the “restricted category” at around 13 years old. I fell in love with the writing of Russian authors, and I was experiencing a kind of longing for a life I haven’t lived. The vivid descriptions of the old times sparked my curiosity. I continued reading one book after the other, not being able to get enough of them.
I remember the first time I came across a particular quote in Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”:
“Everything I know, I know because of love.”
Perhaps I was too young to fully grasp its meaning, but it’s a quote that has accompanied me ever since.
I believe that this quote has many applications because love has infinite manifestations.
Another quote that I love is about storytelling as we go through life, and comes from Dostoevsky’s “White Nights”:
“But how could you live and have no story to tell?”
I have met some people who couldn’t think of anything to say about their journey through life. Either because they haven’t stopped to think about it, or because they didn’t think their life story mattered enough.
Every survival, every failure, every story of passion and sorrow, gets interwoven into a unique fabric that becomes our story as we traverse in life through love. Everyone has a story to tell, and when they’re encouraged to do so the result is magical.
Do you have any life mottoes or other words that you live by?
