As we interact with others, we must begin on the right foot. We know just how important getting off to a good start is.

However, what ratio of positive to negative thoughts, feelings, and interactions should we seek?

Studies show that at least a three to one ratio of positive to negative is required to breakthrough.

To get there, it is essential to be intentional.

We are taught to be positive. So we are, however, we are lulled into thinking that it is ok to be both positive and negative.

This makes us feel balanced. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Lesson to Learn

Being positive as a leader has never been more critical.

It takes on special significance when we are in a crisis. Individuals are naturally more scared and sensitive these days.

Going out of our way to be upbeat gives us a chance to lift other’s spirits.

Even smiles and laughter during video calls count toward being positive.

We need to use all means at our disposal to be positive to overcome the detrimental impacts of negative thoughts and feelings.

Answer for Me

Early in my career, I sought to be measured and balanced. I figured I needed to be straight forward and tell it like it is.

These days, I am more thoughtful to ensure I limit my criticism to what is most needed.

I see that people are more responsive to my insights when I can help them know what is worthwhile in the situation.

By focusing on more of the positives, I can reinforce and support good behaviors and outcomes.

Keeping my negative thoughts on what is only necessary gives me a better chance at reaching the three to one positivity ratio that has been shown to move the needle.

Action

Look for ways to complement what is going well.

Seek to be more positive — and to talk about it.

Make mental notes of how often you are choosing positive versus negative.

Attempt to exceed a three to one positive to negative ratio. Witness how appreciated this approach is and share it with others.

It helps to praise and encourage them.

Use your critiques sparingly and to most significant affect.

Keeping an overall positive approach will pay dividends in better outcomes and personal relationships.

Daily Habits

Each day offers a unique opportunity to start again.

Seeking a 3:1 ratio of positive responses will produce better outcomes.

Find simple ways to encourage others. When you do, you will feel better and be more motivated to serve others.

You can do all of this while getting the work done.

It will build better relationships, as well.
