Being an Introvert is Not Something to Fix

Learn to respect your introversion, work with it, and rely on it

“The day I began to live is the day I discovered being an introvert was awesome.” — Maxime Lagace

They live in the quiet corners of the world, a world of gentle shadows and whispered secrets.

They are the tribe of introverts. They are the silent observers, the profound thinkers, the relentless dreamers.

Their souls crave solitude, and their hearts find solace in the pages of books, music’s soft wings, or their own thread of thoughts.

Introverts are often judged by people

For some, being an introvert is synonymous with being arrogant, a loser, a loner, or a wallflower (there are other shockingly negative dictionary definitions and synonyms — but that might be a topic for another story).

Meet Eliza, a woman who learned to wear her introversion like a well-worn cape. She loves to be in the company of books in libraries, those places where the scent of old paper mingles with her thoughts.

“Why are you so quiet?” — Her friends often pushed her to be more outgoing and to join them at parties and other social gatherings.

But Eliza was one of those lucky people who understood early on that her quietude was not a flaw to be fixed but a gift to be cherished.

“Introverts,” she remembers Mr. Hawthorne, her therapist, saying, “are the keepers of quiet magic. They see what others miss — the delicate dance of falling leaves, the way sunlight weaves through branches, the hidden stories written into stone walls.”

Eliza had always felt like an outsider, a puzzle piece that didn’t quite fit. But Mr. Hawthorne’s words wrapped around her like a cozy blanket. Perhaps being an introvert wasn’t a deficiency; perhaps it was an invitation to a secret world that is not accessible to everybody.

One rainy evening, as the raindrops transported her into the inner world, Eliza found a leather-bound journal. Blank pages waiting for her ink. She took her pen and began to write her manifesto:

”To all introverts,

Your quietude is your friend. It is not a flaw but your introspection island. The world may judge you or ignore your presence, but remember this:

*You are not broken. You are not incomplete. You are not a creep.

*I love you standing in that corner at that party. I love that you prefer to talk about books or not speak at all, or look at the trees, flowers, and sky.

*You are blessed because you do not fear solitude; you are not always desperately looking for something to do, something to amuse you, or something to judge.

*You’re not a weirdo, you are just different.

Eliza closed the journal, with her heart lighter. She knew she wasn’t alone. On their introspection islands, other introverts carry the magic of silence. She knew the world needed quiet magic more than ever.

Why is being an introvert, not something to fix, and what are the benefits of being an introvert?

  • You can learn a lot from other people’s stories because you’re not too preoccupied with telling your own
  • You notice things that other people miss and you are more capable of reflecting and processing deeply what happens around you
  • You are capable of unique insights, ideas, and observations that are not easily accessible to extroverts or ambiverts
  • Introverts make the best writers. As John Green says in The Fault in Our Stars, about writing, “It’s a profession for introverts who want to tell you a story but don’t want to make eye contact while doing it”

Final thoughts and advice:

  • Introversion and shyness are not the same thing; if you don’t like to small talk, it doesn’t mean you are rude; and focusing on your inner world doesn’t make you an anti-social person
  • Work rather with your introversion than against it; make it a strength, not a weakness. Those labels —shy, aloof, arrogant, and unfriendly — don’t define you. You are just an introvert — compassionate, intelligent, and sensitive; creative, empathetic and thoughtful
  • Play to your strengths but when needed, push yourself outside your comfort zone (do this in small steps)
  • Prioritize your need for quiet time when you experience introvert hangovers after spending an extended period interacting socially
  • There is nothing wrong with you, and you don’t need fixing — you are just an introvert. And introversion is a gift.
  • Although you are an introvert and love writing, you can also find it extremely difficult sometimes to get your ideas out of your head and put them onto paper — but there’s a simple solution Loren Sapala gave us: “This might sound basic, but just start. Just write something. Anything…Just do what you can right now”.
  • No one is an absolute introvert or an absolute extrovert. It’s a spectrum. Humans are situational and contextual. I found this quote and I love it: “You think you’re an introvert because you like being alone, but in reality, you just love being at peace, and you’re actually extroverted around people who bring you peace.”
