Being a Writer is a ‘Real’ Job
Even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes
The other day I was talking to someone about how I am going to be doing life coaching in addition to writing. I happened to mention the rates I was going to be charging and she made a face at me. I said, it’s cheaper than going to a therapist, they charge $350 per hour. She said something dubious about “you Americans” and then abruptly changed the subject.
Some of us creatives get that a lot about our work. People don’t realize the time it takes to craft a story. Or perhaps they just don’t care. Art isn’t a ‘worthwhile’ profession and so we get overlooked.
But look at the sheer amount of people consuming written content on the internet every day. The creator economy is booming. Listen to Tim Denning, or anyone else who is ranking here on Medium. Writing online can change your life.
We are getting paid for our creations. Sometimes the amount feels like a pittance compared to the amount of hours that we put in, sure. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a ‘real’ job.
We work hard. We make a difference. We say what needs to be said.
And,
The pen is mightier than the sword.
~ Edward Bulwer-Lytton
With words, we have the power to change people’s hearts and people’s minds. We have the power to make them think. And that really is an awesome power, don’t you think?
