Being A Science Communicator Sucks

This comes from my own personal experience being a science communicator for nearly three years… it sucks.

People generally do not like being told they’re wrong even when the evidence is clear and the data is there. Humans are often irrational and shield themselves away from uncomfortable disconfirming information.

So, as a science communicator, I am fighting an uphill battle. Not to mention being a science communicator entails threats to myself, my family, and sometimes legal disputes. But would I give up this sucky profession that I do mainly for free… absolutely not.

Science communication is essential for the advancement of the human species. I'll give two main reasons as to why.

First, in our information age, it is nearly impossible to be an expert in everything. There is just simply too much to know too quickly. Many do not have the time or brain span to study one discipline for years let alone them ALL.

Second, a scientifically literate society is more responsible. Being educated on particular topics lead people to be less susceptible to lies, hoodwinking, and deception.

People cannot take advantage of you on a particular topic if you understand it. The job of the science communicator is so you the layperson can understand science just a little bit better. Even this little bit of knowledge can help guide you through the sea of misinformation online.

Being a science communicator is a thankless job at times, but it is essential for today’s modern age.
