Beijing Olympics

“The Genocide Games”

Photo by zhang kaiyv on Unsplash

Perhaps you’ve read the phrase Genocide Olympics or Genocide Games in the news recently. Or maybe you’ve heard of Biden, Trudeau, and or Boris’ diplomatic boycott of Beijing’s Winter Olympics. It’s all because of China’s crimes against humanity, and ongoing Uyghur Genocide.

In 2017, the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) established what they call “re-education centres,” where over a million Uyghurs have been: arbitrarily detained, placed under mass surveillance, tortured, deprived of food, forced to work, forced to marry and had both fundamental and religious freedoms suppressed among other violations. The aim of these modern-day concentration camps is clear: the PRC wants to commit an ethnic cleansing of the Uyghur population in China to advance Han Chinese dominance. At first, Chinese officials denied that these camps existed and offered no explanation for the millions of missing Uyghurs. Thanks to technology, high-resolution satellite images revealed the truth and exact locations. Key organizations monitoring these camps include Google Earth and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s (ASPI) International Cyber Policy Centre which has identified and analyzed more than 380 suspected detention facilities in the Xinjiang region. This oppression of Uyghurs and Turkic Muslims, an ethnic minority in China is causing international criticism but not enough is being done. Chinese authorities continue to abduct Uyghurs and forcibly sterilize women against their will, family members, including children, continue to lose contact and go missing and concerns of organ harvesting have come from Amnesty International. As disheartening and difficult as these events are, Beijing is still hosting the 2022 Olympics with a Genocide hidden behind closed doors. As global citizens, we have a duty to speak up and criticize the abuse of human rights anywhere and everywhere and stop genocide in its tracks. Thankfully international actors and frameworks exist to assist with human rights violations, but why has it taken so long? Following the winter Olympics, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is said to visit Xinjiang, the region where the majority of reported internment camps are located. Hopefully, the UN’s visit will help put an end to these human rights abuses but only time will tell.

The US state department declared that the Uyghur Genocide is “the largest-scale detention of an ethno-religious community since the Second World War.”

The comparisons between the Uyghur Genocide and the Holocaust are sounding alarm bells worldwide. We need to prevent history from repeating itself.

While I don’t expect you to boycott the Olympics or the athletes that have spent their entire careers to get to this point. I hope to spread awareness and condemn the Chinese government.
