Beginner Tips for SEO Title and SEO Description on Your Medium Article

Should you care about them? Yes — here’s why.

Nowadays, the internet runs on SEO-this and SEO-that, with no foreseeable end in sight as algorithms take over the world.

SEO or search engine optimization is basically optimizing your article for search engines to pick it up, (in terms of Medium) display it widely, and present it to people who are searching for what you are writing about.

It can be utilized to increase traffic to your blog/article (yay!) and rank you higher on Google, which comes with a long list of perks, ranging in importance depending on your goal(s).

There are several different search engines that people will find your Medium article through. Google, of course, Yahoo, Bing, Duckduckgo, Reddit, Ecosia, etc. When you have enough data on a published article, Medium will actually show you where the majority of traffic is being generated from.

Here are two very different examples of high-performing articles.

One was written based on a Tiktok trend at the time after my friend informed me of the topic and I was interested in doing further research. Google loved it, and it still lives on the first page of Google when I search the topic. But, as you can see, only 1% of traffic was accumulated internally, meaning from Medium.

While I earned just over $100 from my Manifest Anything With the 3–6–9 Method piece, published in July of 2020, (not much, considering the high view count,) Google simply loved it! This information helped me learn more about SEO and how it directly impacts my earnings. Also, doing well on Google has allowed this article to have a longer shelf-life on Medium, which is always something you want.

Here is another example, which also did well due to its carefully crafted SEO description. It earned 1000+ views within the first day of publishing. Hey, I’ll take it!

Search engines scour the web to find the best answer to whatever is being searched, also known as a query.

Medium happens to have high domain authority, which means that things published on the platform have a higher chance of being featured on Google than something published from your WordPress blog, for example.

Google determines what ends up on the first page of search results based on relevancy. This is where your SEO title and SEO description come in.

SEO Title

SEO titles do not exceed 60 characters. They are automatically the title of your article (on Medium). The title is extremely important and should contain relevant keywords that will be mentioned throughout your article, and especially within the first paragraph. You can have a different SEO title from your article title if you want, but I typically keep it the same.

Your title should be exactly what the searcher is looking for. Do not be vague or clickbaity. Be direct and to the point with no fluff or extra words. One awesome writer and a huge inspiration to me is Anangsha Alammyan. She taught me that an ideal title is 6–12 words, so I try to keep that in mind for myself as well.

Adjust Title and Description

  • To adjust your title, go to the top of your draft where there are three dots.
  • Click on More Settings.
  • Scroll down and adjust accordingly.
  • Press save.
  • Scroll up and click Back to editor
  • That’s it!

Your SEO description is also equally important if you choose to share your stories on the platform Many Stories. After sharing your article, a portion of the SEO description will be displayed below your title. It will help readers decide whether or not your article is worth reading.

As always, happy writing! If you’re not yet a writer for The Orange Journal, drop your Medium handle below and ask to be added as a writer, as submissions are currently open.
