Summary

The author, Alison Tennent, expresses a sense of political homelessness due to the polarization within the left-wing political spectrum, where she feels traditional left-wing ideals are being overshadowed by extreme "cancel culture" and intolerance towards debate.

Abstract

Alison Tennent identifies as a left-wing individual who is increasingly disillusioned with the current state of left-wing politics. She believes in progressive policies such as Universal Basic Income (UBI), government housing, welfare nets, and environmental action but is critical of the radicalized left's approach to cancel culture, no-debate policies, and the use of slurs and witch hunts. Tennent argues that the radical left's intolerance towards differing opinions is counterproductive and mirrors the extremism of the far right. She warns that this shift is not only alienating traditional left-wing supporters but also potentially leading to a resurgence of conservative politics. The author advocates for a return to rational debate and a divorce from the identity politics that she believes are harming the left's ability to effect positive change.

Opinions

  • The author feels that the left has become too radical, abandoning traditional left-wing values in favor of extreme positions and intolerance.
  • She criticizes the use of cancel culture and the suppression of debate within left-wing circles, suggesting it leads to an echo chamber that stifles progress.
  • Tennent is concerned that the far left's actions are inadvertently strengthening the far right by pushing people away from left-wing ideologies.
  • The author emphasizes the importance of rational debate and the need for the left to reclaim its power by distancing itself from identity politics and extremism.
  • She predicts a correction in politics where the pendulum may swing back to conservative ideologies if the left does not address its current issues.
  • Tennent implies that the current state of the left is leading to a sense of political homelessness for those who hold traditional left-wing beliefs but reject the new radicalism.

Before the Left left the Left

I’m left wing, but feeling worryingly politically homeless, because I believe in de facto left wing ideals such as UBI, government housing, a welfare net, socialised education and healthcare, and doing something about the environmental crisis we are all facing, but I refuse to kowtow to bullying cancelites, no debate terrorism, and modern day slurring and witch burning.

I’m so genuinely left wing that North Americans, who sometimes appear to have only a tenuous grasp on definitions, have accused me of being both a communist and a socialist (sometimes interchangeably) on many occasions. Back when I used to bother commenting on political pieces from time to time.

Back before the Left left the left.

Manichean thinking is a political pestilence. The no debate tactics promoted by the radicalised left, whereby any dissent from the party line means you are branded with slurs and isms, can be appropriated against them too.

The synthetic left seem to have gone from promoting tolerance to holding a deep and abiding intolerance of anyone who disagrees with them for any reason.

Without the mute button I would be missing large clumps of hair.

The Glass is Full

Some therapists use the metaphor of a container — let’s say a glass — being filled up. Drop by drop the glass fills. The container holds. The container holds. The container holds. And then one last drop causes the glass to overflow and all of a seemingly sudden we have overwhelm. My glass of being accused of (insert slur) for requesting a rational debate is now quite, quite full.

I now avoid as much as possible most hard right or hard left political discussions.

Which would be a perfect compromise, except that even when ignored, the permaffended one ach end fall victim to false consensus fallacy, and continue to strut and bellow through their twinkly echo chambers, gaping fixedly at their own reflections, twirling batons of proud ignorance, thus are thus encouraged to continue to spray their pustulent policies over a deeply resistant society.

Sadly, as they’re not listening anyway, and I no longer have the patience to tolerate their intolerance, all I have left in my toolbox is to turn away.

Verbal Diarrhoea

I’d rather have the screaming red hot squirts than read more asinine newthought permaffended fact-free lectures.

Those of us who truly believe in left wing ideals are going to have to divorce ourselves entirely from the current crop of identity nonentities if the left is to find its power again.

That’s why I currently mute many on this site. Still not sure why? Allow Jonathan Pie (played by the left wing comedian Tom Walker) to elaborate for me. (Give it a minute, it’s satire.)

The radicalised far left regurgitate what they imagine is nourishment for their needy, scrawny fledglings, but in reality they’re puking up toxic waste.

The offspring of the synthetic radicalised left will never fly, but instead crash to a pitiful end, dragging the entire enterprise with them, chirruping weakly before perishing in the same flood of rancid irrationality that their parroting parents have force fed them.

And shackled to these imbeciles, those of us who are actually left wing will also be left to rot under the withered tree from which the NeoLeftists have shat their ignorance.

The extreme right will rise. They already are. Pay attention, this is a bad thing.

Punishment and Reward

The masses are not nuanced in their politics. They vote to punish and to reward. When you spray political shittery like a hippo at the zoo, the masses want to punish you. When pollies parrot the same nonsensical gobbledegook in a desperate (and always ultimately doomed) attempt not to offend anyone at all they receive the same treatment.

And that’s why I am very concerned about the coming correction.

The pendulum is swinging away from identity politics and back to conservative politics.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t swing too far.

What’s that you project? You would like to believe I’m not telling the truth about being lifelong left wing? Interestingly, liars often tend to make that assumption about others:
