Chanson on Life and Aging
Before the End Does Come
Memories and What Remains
No one ever knows The days that yet might be, No calendar will show The years still left to see What joys or miseries Await you from among The obstacles you meet Before the end does come.
Remember how it goes, That simple melody, Slowly fading echoes Of life that used to be A building symphony, The instruments now hung Behind a paling screen, Before the end does come.
What have I got to show For more than seventy, You think I might have known The glass would rush to empty, The final granules flee With quickening descent, Their speed beyond belief, Before the end does come.
Take in the salty breeze, The seashore and the foam Sit peacefully with me Before the end does come.
Chanson: The rhyme scheme is usually ababbcbC ababbcbC ababbcbC bcbC, where the capital “C” is a refrain. Consistent meter and rhyme scheme followed by a four-line concluding stanza.
