Before Blissful Sleep Calms Your Concerns, What Do You Say to God
Let’s explore two reasons for regaining a good night sleep

Remember how well you slept as a child?
First is the prayer we prayed when we were young. The second will amaze you on what God does for us as we sleep.
I’ll unpack these two to put a stop to sleepless nights.
Sleeping well through the night has more to do with your thoughts than your pillow
In peace, I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord will keep me safe. (Psalms 4:8, NLT).
The above verse prompted Joseph Addison to pen these words in 1711, over three hundred years ago. We still say this night-time prayer.
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray thee, Lord, my soul to keep; If I should die before I wake, I pray thee, Lord, my soul to take. If I should live for other days, I pray thee, Lord, to guide my ways. Amen.
You can read more about this prayer by clicking The Beautiful Meaning and Story of “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.
We said this prayer as young boys and girls, then with a kiss from mom or dad, we fell asleep. No cares, worries, or to-do lists could keep us awake through the night.
I cannot overstate the importance of a good night’s sleep. After you read my article, come back to click this link to understand the importance of sleep. Why Do We Need Sleep?
Do you want a repeat of long nights of blissful sleep you had as a child?
I appreciated my bedtime prayers. But as an adult Christian, I’ve read of God’s promises about sleep. So, I’ve added to my prayer before my wife and I pull the sheets up, close our eyes and fall asleep. At the end of this post, I’ll give a short rendition of my bedtime prayer.
Belief in God and His Son, Jesus, has many benefits
In fact, God has much to say about us having a good night’s sleep.
- You and I are God’s beloved people.
For so He gives His beloved sleep. (Psalms 127:2b NKJV).
Christians do not have to toss and turn through the night. We have a place to lay down our cares. Where? At the foot of the cross, we cast our day’s troubles. Jesus cares. And we go to sleep.
“Every time we go to bed, we humbly admit again that the world will be fine without us for a while.” Pastor Jonathan Parnell
Pastor Parnell reveals in his article why sleep is vital for us to have good days. Three Reasons to Get Some Sleep.
When we go to sleep, we release our grip on the world, letting it spin without our help for the next eight hours. For those of us who think we can control everything every day. Later, you will see who is in control through the night. Going to sleep frees our grip.
Let’s look at some of the promises from God for a good night’s sleep
- One of the comforts in having Jesus as our Savior is a good night’s sleep. Accepting Jesus into our hearts makes us heirs of salvation.
As I close out my day, I envision angels surrounding our home. Keeping us safe through the night. One of the most comforting verses I say before I hit my pillow is from Hebrews chapter one.
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (Hebrews 1:14, KJV).
The ‘now I lay me down to sleep’ from Psalms 4:8 solidifies my belief, God sends His angels to protect us through the night.
- King David knew God would send His angels.
Wow, this is a comforting promise of God.
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. (Psalms 34:7, NIV).
Can’t you see them? The head angel sent to my house stations four or more each side. He charges each to protect these people inside. Why? The head angels says, “these are the beloved of God, He wants no harm to come them through the night.” Actually, no angel questions God’s directive. But, you understand, I get carried away with the thought, God loves us.
- When Jesus defeated the Devil after tempted by him, God sent His angels to comfort him.
Then the Devil left him, and angels came and attended him. (Matthew 4:11, NIV).
We can expect the same results when our day didn’t turn out the way we had planned. God’s angels will attend to our fears, and regrets allowing us to sleep through the night.
- This verse clinches it for me.
For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. (Psalms 91:11, NKJV).
Now we’ve come full circle. We thought we were in charge for the day, didn’t we? Night has a way of releasing us from being in control, at least for the night. Now His angels take charge over us. Isn’t that what this verse says? Release your cares and troubles, hand them over to Jesus.
Here is my shortened version of my bedtime prayer, ‘lay us down to sleep.’
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Your mercy and grace to us today. You have blessed us. We know you will give us a good night of sleep because Your word says You will. We thank you knowing Your angels are assembling around our home to keep us safe as we sleep. Jesus, we know You will attend to any sickness or disease trying to enter our bodies. Because of Your love for us, we will wake refreshed in the morning. Amen.
Be encouraged today. We Christians can expect every night to be a good one. Because we have a loving God who has promised to protect those He loves. You are a child of God. Now I lay me down to sleep, and expect a blissful and sound sleep tonight.
That’s right, all Christians can expect every night to be a good one. Because we have a loving God who has promised to protect those He loves. You are a child of God.
