The podcast: a powerful learning medium
With over 1,950,000 podcasts it might take time to discover the ones that benefit you most. If you work on a team or lead others, exposure to fresh ideas and perspectives is important. The right podcasts can become valuable tools in your toolkit helping you go further, faster.
Beginning my journey into podcast listening 5 years ago, my tastes and needs have changed. However, the podcasts I am suggesting really helped me become more effective in my work and in life. I’ve found they easily integrate into my busy routine and bring me new thoughts, creative focus, and positive energy.
Becoming the leader others want to follow requires continuous exposure to new ideas. Examining different perspectives, frameworks, and practices can open the door to new possibilities. It is one way you can begin leading yourself more effectively.
These are some of my current favorites.
1) The Read to Lead Podcast
Jeff Brown explores some of the best non-fiction, business books in open dialog with the authors. If you are a reader, his program provides highlights into the thoughts behind the words. Hearing authors first hand describe how they approach writing as they share their expertise is invaluable. Jeff’s program may introduce you to authors you might have missed on your own, and explore topics spurring new leadership growth.
Why I listen: Jeff’s podcast is valuable to me. He teaches that leaders are readers and curates powerful leadership content for me to explore and enjoy. A former broadcaster, he one of the best interviewers I have listened to in the past 5 years. He also has his own book coming out soon and has a course on how to become a podcaster.
2) Accidental Creative
Todd Henry provides insight into what it takes to lead a creative team and perform creative work. This makes The Accidental Creative Podcast well suited for teams and team leaders who want to work towards high performance. A healthy blend of how to think about developing your craft with actionable steps makes Todd’s program a high-value listen. He may bring you fresh insight providing breakthroughs you need in your work and in life.
Why I listen: His insight and ability to communicate the creative mind are unparalleled. Every episode brings me a refreshing look at work from the creative side. His work has been invaluable to me as a growing leader and community architect.
3) Pivot with Jenny Blake Podcast
Jenny Blake is the founder of Pivot Method. She focuses her work on helping forward-thinking individuals and organizations navigate change. She is a dynamic speaker and interesting to listen to. Her program is an extension of her book. She is the author of Pivot: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, which won the Axiom Best Business Books Award in the careers category. Her work is inspiring and gets you thinking about what is next for you.
If you are making a big change, the pivot method developed by Jenny may be what you need to save time and effort getting where you need to go.
Why I listen: Jenny is a focused entrepreneur that helped me think through professional changes I wanted to make and how to help my teams navigate change. Accepting change will come, the next question is how to do it effectively. Jenny helps me think through topics and issues I need to move in an agile way.
4) The Tim Ferriss Show
Tim Ferriss is listed as one of Fast Company’s “Most Innovative Business People” and one of Fortune’s “40 under 40.” His podcast is unique. He goes deep into topics with some episodes being the longest you will find across the podcast landscape. He is an early-stage technology investor/advisor who has authored several books. You may have heard of The 4-Hour Workweek. That’s Tim Ferriss!
Why I listen: Tim has a free-flowing format and takes his time exploring a topic with his guests. Interviews are longer than most and extremely conversational. The guests are diverse and Tim’s depth of knowledge brings out the best in those he interviews for our benefit. I have expanded my knowledge in technology, science, and personal development by listening to Tim’s podcast.
5) At the Table with Patrick Lencioni Podcast
Patrick is a prolific author one of the founders of the Table Group. I bet you have heard of his books such as The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team. His podcast is a new medium of his leadership and team-building teaching. The podcast explores the top factors contributing to high-performing teams. Time is also spent discussing how to overcome leadership challenges we face at work.
Want to know what goes on behind the scenes in the board room conversations? He tells you as he has been there. This newer podcast may give you the insight you need to solve a current problem you are facing. The team has real conversations and offers practical advice helpful to everyday leaders.
Why I listen: Pat also talks about culture and how to building world-class organizations; a passion I share. He is wise, funny, and insightful. His answers are clear and advice sound. To me, he is the quintessential leader coach on how to effectively lead a team and organization.
6) Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield Podcast
Amy’s podcast is filled with interviews and behind-the-scenes secrets from her biggest entrepreneurial launches. She is purposeful about making everything on her podcast as actionable and profitable as possible. She is focused on serving her listeners and offers insight into how to build a business from the ground up.
Why I listen: Want to feel better about your chances of success? Listen to Amy. She wields an encouraging voice while providing actionable advice. If you are interested in learning about how to leverage social media, you will benefit greatly from Amy’s wisdom.
7) Brand You Podcast with Mike Kim Podcast
Mike's podcast is dedicated to helping you build an influential and portable personal brand. He is not afraid to explore his personal story as he shares from his background in organizational leadership, public speaking, coaching, and marketing experience. Each episode will leave you feeling better than when you started listening and encourage you to love your work and leave your mark on the world.
Why I listen: Shepherding your team effectively and influencing others requires engaging others on their terms. I’ve found Mike’s insights on personal branding helpful in articulating my core values and further develop my underlying message. Personal branding currently is a hot topic in organizations today. Mike has a perspective you may find helpful in developing yours. Each episode contains his experience in how to develop a personal brand business. The emphasis on marketing and copywriting may help you ensure you are conveying the message you intend.
8) Coaching for Leaders
Dave Stachowiak is a masterful coach. Personable and generous; every episode is filled with more actionable advice and practices than you can imagine. Over the years Dave has developed tons of valuable content that he makes available for free to his listeners. He has developed a highly acclaimed coaching program for those who are ready. This is a generous podcast filled with valuable content for the person ready to grow their leadership. He believes that leaders are not born, they are made.
Why I listen: The program is high quality and comprehensive. His e-mail subscribers receive valuable insights and links to other highly sought-after content. I even wrote to him once and he responded personally which I won’t forget. His wife Bonnie also joins some of the episodes and adds tremendous insights. Mostly, Dave provides actionable coaching techniques you can apply right away.
Bonus: The Call to Mastery with Jordan Raynor
Jordan Raynor produces a high-quality, inspirational podcast. He engages with Christian leaders who are pursuing world-class mastery of their craft. You will find high-caliber guests such as Janeen Uzzell (COO of Wikipedia), Dr. Caroline Leaf (Cognitive Neuroscientist), Kevin and Sam Sorbo (Actors) on his program.
A wide diversity of thought. The central point is learning about each guest’s path to mastery, within a Christian context. Specifically how their faith influences their work.
Why I listen: For individuals with a Christian worldview, this is a must-listen. Upbeat, inspirational, and practical; hearing stories from individuals who are making a difference in the world inspires me to lean into my own giftings.

While podcasts are not a silver-bullet to professional growth, they can be a valuable tool in helping you level up your leadership, talent, and creativity.
