Become The Person You Want To Be
No radical transformation needed. Just bring yourself.

“The past is already gone, the future is not yet here. There’s only one moment for you to live, and that moment is the present.”-Gautama Buddha
What would you do over if you could go back in time? What would you tell your past self to do differently? Humans spend a lot of their lives dwelling in the shadow of would, could and should.
We find it easy to imagine what we would say to ourselves in different stages of our younger lives because we now have the gift of hindsight.
Close your eyes. Imagine that your future self is standing in front of you. What do you say? What advice can you give to someone that is ideally a better version of the person you are in this moment?
#1: Live Your Dreams, and If You Aren’t, Start Today
This formed as a question in my head: what am I doing? Am I a famous writer? I have always wanted to tell stories, in some medium. My wish for my future self is that she is telling someone’s stories. My wish for my future self is that she is revitalized by the work she does and joyful in the life she leads.
#2: Love Yourself. Know Your Worth.
We imagine the people we are going to “become”-even though we already have those future iterations of ourselves inside of us-as better. More enlightened, whole or healed. It’s easy to forget that life is like a winding, mountainous road. It can be easy to lose your way.
My future self may need some reminding. I would tell her that she is worthy of love, and worthy of a life of abundance and joy. These are not things that have to be earned.
#3: Try Something That Scares You Every Day
Yes, this is cliché. It’s also necessary. I’d tell future me to keep pushing herself to make new friends. Lean into change, I would encourage. Take up some new hobbies-remember you’ve been wanting to learn to knit for years? Writing a book will be easier, I would remind future me, if I live a life with a wide variety of experiences.
#4: I Want To Be Proud of You
I would tell my future self that I want to look back when I catch up to wherever she is and be proud of all of the years in between. Whenever you do something-go to work, talk to someone, sit down to relax- think of me, I would say. Would a younger me be proud of you?
Continue to grow in your love for yourself, those you hold close, and the entire world.
You’re Closer Than You Think To “Future You”
I love that what I would tell my future self is advice I can apply to my every day life today. This advice-what I think I might need to hear 10, 20 or even 30 years down the road-puts a new perspective on my life today.
I can’t help but feel like if I live by these “future me” principles, present-day me will grow into the person I know I already am.
I will continue to become the woman who won’t settle for anything but her most joyful life. My capacity to love herself deeply and know my own worth will grow every day. I will continue to strive to widen my range of experiences every day.
I smile thinking about how proud my 13-year-old self would be of the woman I am today.
As quickly as one moment turns into the next, I am already growing into the next iteration of myself.
I’d like to know-what would you tell your future self?
