Become more Effective and Present in your Life with this advice from Bruce Lee

Lately I’ve had a lot to do, all of it is urgent, and all of it is high priority. Because of that, I’ve been getting distracted far too easily. I’ll be working on a video, get it to a good spot, write a bit, experiment in after effects, write, edit the video some more… It’s become a vicious cycle in which everything gets done, but I feel stretched through the process.
I don’t want to feel stretched too thin, but I want to keep doing the things I’m doing. Not only do I want to keep it up, I want to go deeper and further and do even more with it.
First, I came across this famous quote from Bruce Lee.
Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.
Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.
“Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it.”
This was really helpful for me because I’m realizing that I am far too assertive with my time. What I mean is, I always have something I would rather be doing. If I’m working I’d rather be writing. If I’m writing I’d rather be at home with my girlfriend. I always have something in my mind, that I placed there, that distracts me from the thing in front of me.
What if I treated myself like water, and my calendar was the cup, the bottle, the teapot?
So from 9a-Noon, I’m working on making videos for K-Swiss. Before that I’m meditating, reading, and writing to start the day off right. From Noon to 1p I’m eating, reading, writing, or meditating. That’s time for me. After 6 is time for being with my girlfriend and relaxation.
If I block my time so that there is always time for each thing that matters to me, then I can fully give myself over to the task at hand. It really works for me.
“Now, water can flow or it can crash.”
Not only do I want to block out my time to fill the moment fully, I also want to go deeper, and be more effective. Water can flow, or it can crash. When Bruce spoke of crashing, I think he was reminding us that there is a time to be assertive, and having that quiet ability is important to maintain. So when there is a project that requires extra effort, more time, or heavier concentration, you can make the decision to crash over it. You can take that opportunity to assert yourself and make the change you seek.
I will add one thing, and it is this:
“The waters that carved canyons were not powerful, they just never stopped.”
You can flow like water, you can fill the space and the task in front of you, you can crash down on the things that you must assert yourself over. Things will get hard. You fill fail. You will get distracted. You will get arrogant. You will move slower than you want to. You will get frustrated… Just don’t ever stop.
Be like water, my friends.
