Introduction

Hi everyone and thank you for considering becoming a writer for Veritas True Crime.

As many of you know, I’ve been a member of Medium and an Editor for several of the pubs you frequently submit stories to. Most recently now, I joined up with the incredible Dr Mehmet Yildiz, owner and founder of the ILLUMINATION family of pubs, also known as Illumination Integrated Publications and have been publishing a ton of your stories for you across virtually all of the publications in that family of pubs.

No worries, that is not going to change, and we will keep diligently publishing the stories you submit there with all the alacrity we can muster. We have some really fantastic editors in the ILLUMINATION family, such as Aiden (Illumination Gaming), Annelise Lords, The Sturg, Mike Broadly - Healthier Lifestyle, Lawson Wallace, Brooklyn Muse, Surekha Chandrasekhar, Dr. Preeti Singh, Fahaz Hameed, and so many more it would take a week just to list them all.

So I wanted to make very clear that my creation of this pub has nothing to do with any dissatisfaction or angst with those pubs or any member(s) of my ILLUMINATION family. I also want to assure all of you who publish over there that the launching of this pub will in no way influence or diminish the fantastic service we provide to our loyal readers and writers.

That then begs the question….when why create this pub at all? Its a great question and, I’d be willing to bet that none of you will successfully guess the answer. It’s also not a quick, or easy one to explain, so here goes.

The story behind the creation of this publication

Of course, it’s been on my mind to create this pub for a long time. That’s because I’m a sincerely devoted true-crime junkie, just as most of us who favor that genre are.

However, I decided to put off creating it after getting to know Dr Yildiz better, and deciding to volunteer to help as an editor for the ILLUMINATION family. We’ve actually been casually acquaited for several years, but never really took the time to chat personally or privately over that time. Once we did, I knew immediately that I wanted to work with him.

During my growing pains in getting acclimated to processing the often insane quantity of daily submissions within the ILLUMINATION family of pubs, I learned that Medium has a restriction on the number of articles per day any one person can publish, either for themselves, or for other writers.

Who knew?

Suddenly, as I was attempting to publish a particularly great story for one of our sensational writers, I received an error message:

WTH???

I had never experienced this before. After discussing it with several of our other editors as well as Dr. Yildiz, I wrote to Medium support because, as most of us too well know, that’s just about all we can do when things like this happen.

To be as polite as possible, the experience and the numerous failed attempts to find a solution have been less than emotionally, intellectually, or physically reassuring — at least so far.

During my almost constant back and forth with support over this past week, someone (I cannot remember who) suggested that if I were still a publication owner, that limitation would most likely not exist. Later that same day, while talking to Dr. Yildiz, he mentioned that there was once a day where he had to personally edit over 300 stories, and he was never blocked, so he also assumed that being a pub owner shields you from that limitation — he too had once been limited early on in his Medium journey).

As I thought about it, it occurred to me that they may be right. I used to be the owner of several Medium pubs (over 2 years ago) and, sure enough, I was never hit with this limitation, despite publishing many many stories in a single day before.

That’s when the notion struck that maybe it was time to finally create the Veritas True Crime publicaiton on Medium. I already own a very successful true crime podcast off of Medium called The Veritas 7 — True Crime Podcast, so the ability to integrate the two just seemed like a natural progression, particularly if doing so would necessarily lift the currently imposed publishing limitation of around 300 articles per day.

So here we are… but alas, my problem is still not yet solved.

Current Status

So, unfortunately, now am I not only a restricted editor for ILLUMITAION, I am a restricted editor who also owns a new true crime pub!

Going Forward

As I mentioned earlier, I have no intention of leaving ILLUMINATION or ceasing from being an editor in any of those publications, so none of this will effect the job we do publishing your stories (although Medium’s limitation certainly does prevent me from publishing as many of your stories each day as I’d like to).

What it does mean is that I will also need several qualified editors to help me take up the slack, of doing both of these things, particularly until Medium finds a way to life this restriction — they promise me the engineers have been made privy of the issue and are working diligently to find a resolution.

Until then, we will do the best we can in trying to make sure all of your stories get published in an efficient, professional, and timely manner regardless whether you publish them here, or within the Illumination Integrated Publications.

Which brings me back to the purpose of this article in the first place….

Applying to be a Writer on Veritas True Crime

My goal in this is to make the process as simple and as painless as possible, therefore, a simple reply to this article with a message that includes your Medium account tag so I don’t have to go hunting down which ‘John Smith’ you are.

It should state that you would like to be able to submit true crime stories to Veritas, and again, make sure it includes your Medium profile tag to make it somewhat easier on me. That’s all you’ll need to do to be accepted.

After all, my goal as a mentor and tutor is to help new writers on their path to becoming professional writers, and trying to weed out the less experienced novices is simply counter-intuitive.

That brings us to my other issue — needing new editors to help edit and publish stories, especially after I get locked each day until 24 hours has elapsed, meaning effectively that I can only edit every other day.

Applying to be an Editor

If you are interested in being an editor for Veritas True Crime, I am also keeping the guidelines relatively simple and straight forward.

If you are an existing editor for another pub or pubs, you are automatically approved — simple. You already know what needs to be done.

If you aren’t, but would like to be, I need to see a few of the stories that you’ve published here on Medium so I can ascertain if you have the rudimentary grammatical skills necessary to be able to help our writers that do not have advanced grammatical skills on some of the modifications they will need to make in order to be published in our pub. Once I see that you possess those skills, I will add you as an editor as quickly as possible.

Conclusion

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for considering becoming a writer or editor (or both) for our very young, but very exciting new true crime pub.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming you into the fold and enjoying some really great true-crime related content with you.

Be sure to look out for another article that goes over our story submission guidelines as well. This is what will serve as the template for all the stories writers submit, and as a guide for our editors on the types of changes or suggestions they will need to make when editing submissions.
