Bear Steals Candy

For a thief, he’s very polite

bears are large mammals that are notorious for their sweet tooth. From Winnie the Pooh with his honey pot to Yogi Bear and the treats in picnic baskets, bears and sweets are fictional tropes we are all familiar with.

What people don’t expect, however, is to actually face a candy craving bear in real life.

Yet, according to this YouTube video, that is just what two convenience store clerks encountered while working the graveyard shift near Lake Tahoe, California.

In the video, you can see the bear waltzing through the automatic door like a pro, obviously clever enough to have figured out how to gain access to the scrumptious sweets he desires.

The black bear was not aggressive. In fact, according to one of the clerks, bears had previously been chased out of the parking lot. The thieving bear clearly wants the clerk to move away when he enters the store, but once the man backs off, the sweet-savoring ursine ignores him in favor of satisfying his late night cravings.

The first time he enters the store, he simply grabs a bag of Snickers and leaves.

For a modern-day robber, he is very polite. Yes, he shoplifts, but he sticks to candy instead of expensive items. He also doesn’t trash the store or leave with a cart full of stuff.

And when the clerks leave him alone, he shows no aggression.

Another night, the bear comes back. While, again, he does not attack the clerk or destroy the store — this time his presence is more problemetic as he settles down in the candy aisle to devour a whole box of Three Musketeers.

This time, the clerk on duty calls the police.

The bear, seeing the police arrive. grabs one more snack for the road and dashes out of the store. This seems to indicate the bear’s familiarity with law enforcement, making me wonder if he is responsible for a multi-county crime spree.

According to the video, he is later captured and transported to a wilderness area.

Watching this, I was thinking to myself, if you are going to get robbed, this bear was the way to go.

Yes, he’s a 500 pound black bear that could have easily killed someone. Yet, while he is dangerous, I also found him amusing and even cute, particularly when he settled down in the candy aisle to munch on sweets.

Of course, it was good for him to be removed from the area before someone got hurt. However, watching the video, I found myself laughing at the bear’s brazen behavior. I could do this precisely because no one got hurt.
