Be Very Thankful That You Are Not Homeless

Being unhoused is a sad way to live

Living without a home is a lot for thousands of people.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has reported that there are over half a million people in the United States who can be considered to be homeless. That figure fluctuates and is difficult to accurately access. Some people move in and out of homelessness or are in a temporary situation of being without a roof over their heads.

Homelessness is a huge problem throughout the world. People often have financial and health difficulties which cause them to be without shelter and food. They must beg or steal in order to survive.

Life is challenging, and homelessness would be a major challenge.

There are various degrees of homelessness. Those who are more fortunate are able to find refuge in a homeless shelter where they are provided with a place to sleep and food to eat. They can take a shower and get cleaned up. They may be given opportunities and help in finding a job.

Others are living out in the elements in small tents or without any form of shelter. It is a sad situation for people to be without a place to call home.

Groups of people find spaces that are not being occupied where they set up small tents and live in difficult circumstances. They generally need to be near civilization where they are able to secure some food. They do not have conveniences such as running water or bathroom facilities.

Sometimes people live in small trailers or even cars where they are able to have some form of shelter. They may find a place to light for a time until they are forced to move.

Many people might have met or talked with someone who is homeless or who has had times in their lives when they were unhoused. Some of their stories are very sad and pathetic.

People need not only a place to live but also could use a helping hand to escape that way of life. They might need training and money.

It is somewhat of a shame that the billionaires and multi-millionaires do not do more to help the homeless escape that way of life.

It is very unlikely that anyone who is currently homeless would be reading any articles or stories on Medium. There are writers on Medium who have written about periods of time when they experienced homelessness.

At this Thanksgiving time of the year, we should be expressing gratitude for having a home and not being in the homeless population. We might be able to help them in some way, large or small, depending on our individual circumstances.
