Summary

The article provides five practical rules to enhance focus and productivity by minimizing distractions and creating a conducive work environment.

Abstract

The article "Be Focused — Always" addresses the common issue of losing productivity due to distractions such as messages, emails, and interruptions from colleagues. It suggests turning off phone notifications for at least an hour to maintain focus, using headphones to listen to motivating music, politely asking colleagues to wait before seeking help, maintaining a clean workspace, and taking short breaks when tired to rejuvenate mental energy. These strategies aim to help individuals complete important tasks efficiently without unnecessary interruptions.

Opinions

  • Distractions like messages and notifications can significantly disrupt focus and cause important ideas to be forgotten.
  • Frequent interruptions can lead to fatigue and even headaches, as the brain expends energy adjusting to new tasks.
  • Listening to favorite music can enhance concentration by drowning out external noise and providing inspiration and motivation.
  • While collaboration is important, immediate interruptions for assistance can disrupt deep work, and it's suggested to delay such interruptions for 15 minutes.
  • A clutter-free workspace is essential for comfort and concentration, allowing individuals to focus solely on their work tools.
  • Taking short breaks when feeling tired is more beneficial than pushing through exhaustion, as it can lead to quicker problem-solving and a refreshed state of mind.

Be Focused — Always

Have you ever had a day in your life when you wanted to have to be done sth really important and you almost started doing it.. but then you received a message on your phone, email on your laptop, your colleague asked you for help or your friend called you to ask you about something ‘really‘ important. And after that, you tried to continue what you did before, but then something else happens. And after all of these ‘small distractions’ you see that you lost 1–2 hours and you feel very disappointed or tired. And first of all — your job isn’t even started!

I think lot of us had similar situations in our lives like these and worried about their work, where to get more time and make our work to be done. No worries my friend, you ain’t first person who has this question. There are lot of scientists, book writers, article writers and YouTube guys who discovered and still looking for answers to this question. So, let’s take a look at some of them.

Rule#1 Turn off sound on your phone for 1 hour

Don’t use your phone while you are working and make it silence. Because any time you get any message, notification, smiles, questions: these things distract your attention and you are forgetting what you were thinking about just a few minutes ago and good ideas just disappear in the air.

Also when you are changing your focus during any work your brain sets up for another task or activity, that takes some energy. I can bet that you had such feeling as me, when you were distracted several times during an hour and filled tired after that, and might be had some headache.

So, just turn off sounds on your phone for some period of time when you have to be focused.

Rule#2 Use your headphones and listen to music that you like

It’s another approach to get more concentration and not to be distracted. Major part of us listen music while doing some work and it really helps. But how? First of all your music reduces any noise around you in several times and you are focused only on one thing. Second — is a bit more powerful thing. When you listen to your favorite music: it really helps you to get more inspiration and motivation for your work. You actually get more energy and ideas, and most of all your work doesn’t take almost any energy from you and feel good after hours of doing it. And when you got something done it’s like a bonus to your mood and energy level :)

So, just start to listen your favorite music, that can inspire and motivate you, during your work and be in the flow of your work.

Rule#3 Ask your colleague who needs your help to wait 15 minutes

Common situation when you work in office or in the open space with your colleagues: someone wanna ask you any question about your work, some task, sicking for solution or advice. Some of you can say that it’s normal when you work together on some project and you have to work with people. Yes, I agree. People have to help each other, and sometimes it can save a big part of time for finding a solution.

But such kind of distractions, even if it can take only 1–2 minutes and you’ll find a solution very quickly. It will distract you anyway and if you worked on something hard or was just concentrated on something you’ll be turning back in that state in next 10–15 minutes. Just because our brains are working in such way.

So, if you have some work to be done or have an idea in your head. Ask your colleague to wait 15 minutes while you finish up your part of work, while you understand how to accomplish it.

Rule#4 Clean up your workspace

During you are working you have to be comfortable and concentrated. If you have your workspace littered with different things, papers, documents, etc. All of it can interfere with your work and also distract you.

Even more if you have some tools and gadgets on your table that you use often, it’s important to make a free space for them to give you the best way of usage. Also when you see only your laptop and your work tools, you concentrate only on them.

So, if you have lot of unnecessary things on your table — just take them away from there. And make your workspace as clean as possible.

Rule#5 Have a little rest when you feel tired and change focus for something else

The final step. When you fully concentrated and work hard you can get tired, especially when didn’t find a right solution for your problems. Some people usually used to continue work until they find a right solution or solve their problem.

It’s not actually right. Yes, you can just do it until it done! But will it help you? Will it help you are doing it for 3–4 hours, you are tired and you’ll do it for 2–3 hours more? Maybe. But on practice it doesn’t work well. Usually you get more tired after it and feel bad.

But if you take a rest and think about something else, talk to your colleague or friend, drink coffee or tea. Do anything else, besides your work for some time. You’ll be able to be able to turn back with new portion of energy and be able to start from scratch. The most amazing and funny thing, when you are finding a solution in some minutes after rest, while couldn’t find it during some hours.

So, if you worked hard for some period of time and feel really tired. Just take a rest. Talk with someone, play a game, breathe an air or do something else for 5–10 minutes. It will help you to get back with new energy and be ready for next steps.

Thank you a lot for reading my article. I hope these 5 rules would help you in your work and not only there. If you’d like to leave any feedback I would be very glad to hear from you :)
