Be Careful of How You Respond To Sexual Assault Claims

Sexual Assault is a serious and highly sensitive subject in our world today. It is an issue that is quickly becoming a common occurrence, not only amongst everyday people but also amongst the rich and famous.

This morning while going through some of the beautiful articles here on this platform, I came across one that got me thinking.

It was an article written by a lovely lady — I’m not sure if it’s okay to mention her name so I’m not going to.

It was about the ongoing assault case of the famous singer Justin Bieber. Though the article was well written with some clear points and has been getting thousands of claps, While I read it, Something didn’t feel right.

It was clear the author had already believed the accusers as she had tagged the singer a Sexual Predator even without concrete proof of his guilt. I don’t usually comment on sensitive subjects as This but I felt compassion and couldn’t help but say something. So I wrote this:

I also expressed that I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with encouraging Victims to speak up, actually, that’s a necessity. It doesn’t matter how long it takes for them to find the courage to say something about their experience, whether its a minute or 20 years later.

But I also believe it is wrong to judge the accused when they haven’t been proven guilty. Especially when the accused presented some kind of proof like in the case of Mr Beiber who presented some sort of proof of his whereabouts at the time of the said incident. I’m in no way saying he didn’t do it, but I can’t say he did it either and neither can you.

Recently a famous singer in my country was also accused of rape by a lady who claimed that the singer broke into her hotel room and raped her. The incident happened sometime in 2018, The singer denied ever visiting that hotel. Then a few days later, a photo of him taken in the hotel that same day, was found on the Instagram page of the hotel. Also, news of an unlawful arrest of the accuser by the accused was reported to the public.

Apparently she had been picked up by the police and had been denied access to her lawyer or anyone else for that matter. It was also reported that she was threatened to pay the sum of 100 Million for damages. It appeared he was trying so hard to intimidate the young lady with his influence.

Fishy I know! Sincerely a part of me thinks he did it but I’d never come out right to judge and shame him for something as serious as Rape when I’m not sure of the truth. Rather, I’d try to support the lady and encourage her to fearlessly speak up. I’d also demand that thorough investigations be made and demand Justice for the victim whether it is the Accuser or the accused.

A lot of people have been wrongfully accused several times. While a few have been found innocent, some haven’t been that lucky.

A teenage girl in my school was caught having sex with a boy and immediately she shouted “Rape” she claimed the boy had forced himself on her. Afterwards, The boy was treated like a criminal in front of the entire school and immediately expelled. After a series of counselling, The girl confessed she wasn’t raped. Imagine what that false accusation must have done to that young boy.

We must be careful how quick we are to believe rape accusations. Because, in as much as there are real victims, there are also wicked people out there. People who don’t have anything to lose and have no problem with destroying other people’s lives through false accusations.

Do you know how terrible it feels to be wrongfully accused of something as serious and barbaric as Rape? Especially when everyone quickly believes your accuser over you and shames you for it but between you and your accuser, nothing remotely close to that ever happened. I can’t even imagine the consequences.

When Next There’s a Sexual Assault Accusation,

  • remember that there are two parties — two lives at stake
  • try not to be judgement towards both parties
  • encourage the accuser to fight fearlessly
  • don’t judge and shame the accused if there are no proofs of their guilt.
  • remember innocent until proven guilty.

I repeat, Let’s learn to be compassionate towards our fellow humans. We are all we’ve got.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to express my feelings. Thanks for reading. You are the reason I write.
