Batman Captured On An Iconic Liverpool Building
‘Riddle me this, riddle me that, who’s afraid of the big black bat’

It’s all been very exciting in Liverpool UK recently. The new Batman movie, to be released in 2022, was being filmed here, and there have been plenty of chances to catch a glimpse of epic scenes and A list Hollywood stars.
As a lifelong Batman fan, I was thrilled when Liverpool temporarily metamorphosed into spectacular, eccentric Gotham City. I was careful to be on my guard, as notorious supervillians such as Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin (Colin Farrell), and mob boss Carmine Falcon (John Turturro) were roaming our streets, looking to execute their evil plans.
Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz) was also about, displaying her feline antics, and was witnessed creating havoc on a motorbike in one of our city’s cemeteries. But we were safe of course, as the smoldering Batman (Robert Pattinson) was here to protect us ….. providing that is, he could solve the puzzles of criminal mastermind, The Riddler (Paul Dano) in time. We do know though, that not everyone makes it, as Bruce Wayne was spotted attending a funeral ceremony in the city centre.
My son shared the cover photo of this blog on Twitter taken by local photographer Geoff Drake: Batman on the top of the Liver Building, towered by one of the Liver Birds, and being circled by a GCPD (Gotham City Police Department) helicopter. The historic Liverpool building providing the perfect backdrop for this weird and wonderful movie. The tweet currently stands at 13.3K likes, 1.5K retweets, and the photographer is getting enquiries and requests from all over the world for prints of the image.
How great is that! The art is coming to us. Local photographers are getting a chance to capture part of Liverpool’s history being made, and increase their profile. We get to be spectators to the filming of one of the most successful film franchises. This in addition to the fact that when the film is released, it will give huge exposure to the stunning architecture of Liverpool and may even tempt some of you to come and visit to have a tour around where the scenes were filmed.

The Liver Building, which Batman is standing on in the cover image is one of the 3 Graces on the banks of the river Mersey. In an eerie echo of the Dark Knight himself, the mythical Liver Birds which stand on the top of the building are said to watch over the city. Legend states that one of them faces the city to watch over and protect the people. The other watches over the river looking for sailors to come in. This urban myth claims that if the Liver Birds ever flew away, the city would cease to exist!
The Liver Building is also in close proximity to other local attractions: Facing the River Mersey, you can get a ferry over to the Wirral and this was the inspiration for the famous ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ song by Gerry and the Pacemakers. From here, you are within walking distance of the Cavern Club where the Beatles used to play. You can also go on a Beatles tour and visit Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, and the places the Beatles lived when they were young. And of course, we have 2 renowned premiership football clubs in the city, if you like your sport.
Needless to say, even though trouble seems to follow Batman wherever he goes we are delighted he and all his adversaries descended on us for adventure and antics in our city. We know what to do…we will project the Bat-Signal over the Liverpool sky when we need him to return.
