Summary

The poem "Bare" by Jonathan Greene expresses the raw emotional aftermath of a painful breakup.

Abstract

"Bare" is a poignant poem that delves into the depths of loss and heartache following the end of a significant relationship. The speaker is left emotionally devastated, feeling stripped of their ability to function and overwhelmed by memories that now only serve as reminders of what has been irrevocably lost. The poem vividly describes the speaker's sense of being left exposed and vulnerable, while their former partner appears to have moved on effortlessly, enjoying life without the weight of their shared past. The stark contrast between the speaker's inner turmoil and the ex-partner's seemingly carefree demeanor underscores the intense emotional pain and the struggle to rebuild a sense of self after such a profound loss.

A Poem

You stripped me bare of emotion when you left me alone and catatonic rocking in the corner without you

You left me bare naked the last time we would lock eyes and intertwine bodies You held my heart inside of you and then spit it back out into small pieces Leaving me incapable of putting myself back together

I’m shattered bare Sprawling memories across the landscape of our love But all that’s left is detritus of us We are only debris

I am bare from my loss of you and there you are across the street in our café on a date laughing clothed and I am outside Bare
