Barb walks barefoot through the knee-deep snow on her way to nowhere. She is thirty-three and tired of living. The blizzard is a good excuse to end her life—to be able to blame it on nature and not have it look like suicide.

Barb is a small town whore who doesn’t get paid. She was not always this way. She grew up the only daughter of the bank president. She had everything she wanted except love.

Her mother was an alcoholic and a flirt. The middle-aged gossips whispered that her mother slept with anyone she could get her hands on. Barb’s father claimed to be always working, but his black Cadillac was frequently seen in front of widow Yordy’s house.

Barb was a cheerleader and the queen of the prom. Her grades were slightly above average. The boys all dreamed of being her date, but that honor fell to Todd Masters, the six-foot-four basketball star. They dated throughout high school and Barb amazingly held onto her virginity.

College brought unexpected changes. She was no longer the most popular girl in school. She was simply another face in the mirror and she had a difficult time adjusting.

Her salvation came in the form of a budding poet who seduced her with his love poems. She gave herself passionately to him in a way that she never did to Todd. She lived off the poet’s words, his laughter, and his caresses.

One night the poet was cut down by a stray bullet from a cop’s gun during a liquor story robbery. Barb cried for weeks and eventually dropped out of school. She ran home and into the arms of her drunken mother who was not able to provide the emotional support she needed.

Barb took to the streets, wandering about the town. She paid little attention to her clothes and her appearance. She seldom washed her hair or took a shower. Late at night she would find herself in the back seat of some rusty old car with a fat, bald-headed man or a skinny seventeen-year-old virgin. She never asked for any money.

Ten years of living on the streets finally brought Barb to the end of the road. Todd Masters, who is now the sheriff, is the person who finds her leaning against the maple tree. Frozen on her face is a soft gentle smile with a mixture of otherworldly delight. Todd gently kisses Barb on the cheek and wipes a tear from his eye.
