Balloon

A poem about deflation and remembering the space within

Photo by Wengang Zhai on Unsplash

Oh, rosy shiny bulbous balloon, Floating in the living room, Honoring my toddler son Birthdays can be so much fun.

Yesterday upon colored string You rose to ceiling heights, Ready to burst the roof To take your glory to the sky.

Now, just one day gone, You sink above the toy-strewn floor, Lower, not going far Bumped by zooming toy cars.

Your once brilliant color Shine lackluster today; Yesterday presenting smooth and round, Now but wrinkled and oblong.

Remember the time of your expansion, The air filled you to bursting point, The height of orbital fashion Dreaming to be another moon.

How quickly things change. How fast do conditions pass. Expansion and contraction; To sorrow, to laugh.

But tell me, balloon, Do you know life’s secret? Are you aware of the space Within you, dwelling without a trace?

Aware that when your colored form Lies shriveled upon tomorrow’s floor, That space, eternity’s face Will wait behind the temporal door?

Well, enjoy your fleeting moments, Vainly grasp your last moments of air. Your form of names now fail you; Let go, another shape you’ll wear.
