Balance And Your Center

Photo by Bekir Dönmez on Unsplash

When you need to change your center of balance you can do it in a couple of different ways.

You can do it physically by shifting your weight forward or back, left or right.

When you move your center balance is lost. You can regain balance by touching something.

Stand on one leg. When balance starts to waiver touch something with your finger. You will notice you can keep your balance easier.

You can also shift your center with intent. It takes a little practice but when you figure it out it’s another option to change your center of balance.

It happens instantly. Center follows intent. Balance follows center.

When you focus intent it is like touching something. It can bring balance even without touching anything. Try standing on one leg again but this tie when you lose your balance reach out and grab an imaginary bar. This stabilizes center and some balance returns.

You can change your center internally which allows you to move. A natural stance has a center in the middle of mass. Concentrate on that point. Move that point internally with intent and it will affect balance.

You can change your intent externally which also changes your center and allows you to move. When you focus through your target your energy flow goes in that direction. The energy flow carries momentum. When attached it moves your center in line with it.

If you should happen to lose your balance you can regain your center by hopping like a sparrow. This is referenced in the Tai Chi Classics.

When sparrows move their legs move together. We humans have two legs that can move independently. This gives us the advantage of being able to move our center more easily.

Think of a chair with four legs. If you try to push it with all the legs touching the ground it takes a lot of effort. Lean it to one side it gets easier but only in one direction and balance is diminished. Put it on one leg and you can spin it easily.

When you spin you can redirect the energy. Redirected energy will not affect the balance.

Balance is critical. If you move center in any direction it will fall in that direction.

When moving your center intentionally you can control balance. Even with a slight change, you can move. By hopping you will quickly move to regain balance. Once balance is regained you can get rooted and stable.

If you put it in practice it’s another tool to help you maintain balance.

An exercise to practice would be to get in a rooted stance. Have someone push slightly at first in any direction. Balance will be lost.

Work on the different ways to regain balance. When confident have them push harder.

Put this practice into daily life. This practice will make it an instinct. The reaction will become automatic. It will be there if you need it.

It’s easier when you live it.
