Bagel Superiority in Phoenix: Why a Certain National Chain Has the Edge
The state of bageldom in Phoenix
First of all, I am not affiliated with any bagel shop in Phoenix, nor anywhere. This is one gal’s opinion. But I’d defend it!
Back in the day, in Phoenix, the place to get bagels was Karsh’s Bakery. Fresh, doughy, and the biggest selection in town.
But Karsh’s has since closed, and it is sorely missed.
So now, your main choices in Phoenix are Chompie’s and Einstein’s Brothers Bagels. And although Chompie’s would win in virtually any other category, nothing beats an Einstein’s Brothers Bagel.
Chompie’s has come to define deli eating in the Valley. Their mile-high sandwiches cannot be beat. No one can come close to their matzo-ball soup, and I’ll fight anyone on the street if they suggest a better cupcake with buttercream frosting can be found.
However, there’s no getting around the fact that Chompie’s bagels are tough and dry . . . and not in a good way. True, they have a strong selection, but it isn’t enough to make up for a dish that has to be fought to be eaten.
Einstein’s Brothers consistently turns out a soft, chewy, delicious bagel. They have flavors like green chili and jalapeno, in addition to sweeter options like cinnamon raisin and berry, and all are equally enjoyable.
Although I am saddened to have to award the national chain with the superior bagel, they’ve earned it, and I’m certainly very grateful they are here.
Are you from the Phoenix area and have a different opinion? I’d love to hear it in the comments.
Thank you for reading.
