Bad Things Are Sometimes Good Things in Disguise
Roadblocks are often just blessings in disguise
I remember walking into the conference room on a Friday afternoon. I thought it was just another meeting. I was wrong. I was getting let go from the PR firm I was working at in Chicago. I remember that day vividly.
I was heartbroken. I was emotional. I was disappointed.
We had our first kid on the way. I had just started business school part-time at night. We were trying to make ends meet while living in a small condo.
And now I’m getting laid off from my job.
Looking back on that day years later, it was one of the best things that could have ever happened to me. I went on unemployment. I raised my daughter for months while freelancing as a marketing communications consultant.
During that time, I started up my blog, Knowledge Enthusiast. I also attended a lot of conferences. I learned about content marketing and social media when both terms were just starting to become popular.
You could say I was an “early mover” into the fields of content marketing and social media. The knowledge I gained provided me with a springboard for my success at my next job.
Months later, I started at a technology company as a marketing communications manager and it was one of the best jobs I have ever had. The rest, as they say, is history.
A blessing in disguise
I’m thankful for getting handed the pink slip that day. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. It was a blessing in disguise.
According to the Cambridge dictionary, a blessing in disguise is defined as:
“something that seems bad or unlucky at first, but results in something good happening later.”
Bad things can happen to you in life that actually are good things. You just don’t realize it until years later.
Difficulties show us what’s important in life. It gives you the extra motivation to do things you may be thinking about doing but never got around to doing.
“Sometimes small setbacks are just blessings in disguise. They enhance your determination and whole-hearted dedication to achieving your goals.”— Robert Cheeke, an American bodybuilder, motivational speaker, and author
Bad things can change our lives for the better and our perspective.
Bringing it all together
Everything happens for a reason. At the end of the day, everything worked out for the best.
“What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise.”— Oscar Wilde, an Irish poet and playwright
Be thankful for your disappointment. It’s a catalyst for personal growth. That’s what happened to me and it can happen to you.
