“Back” Is a Four-Letter Word

A Poem Dedicated to Teachers Called Back During Covid-19

Photo by Aarón Blanco Tejedor on Unsplash

Teacher. Mother. Daughter. Wife.

So much to live for; so much to lose.

They are calling me back.

Almost 50, and uncertain If I make the cut. My health is good but not perfect.

Why are you calling me back?

My mother’s much older and classified “at risk”.

I miss you mommy. I want to see you again.

Will you come back?

My home needs funding. My students need teaching. I’m out of time.

I must go back!

I plan, I panic, I pray. The loop is relentless.

I want my life back!
