Win Your Day With a Morning Routine
Do these seven things to start your day right
Having a morning routine is an important part of living your life on a sound foundation. A morning routine ensures that you start the day with some wins and that you are the one in control of your day. It doesn’t take much to create and stay consistent in utilizing a morning routine. My days go much better when I am able to get through my morning rituals, and I believe yours will too.
Μost weekday mornings, I get up, drink a glass of lemon water, make my bed, get a cup of coffee, and read for 10–15 minutes while listening to classical music. Then shower and eat breakfast all before my work day starts. My customized routine expands my mind (music and reading), and provides a degree of self-care (lemon water and breakfast). It also furnishes a sense of consistency which comes from doing these actions in this order every morning. Even Siri is trained to turn on classical music first thing in the morning (she also knows to end my day with traditional jazz every evening).
Consistency creates a foundation that allows me to be unflappable in the midst of adversity, not just in the morning but throughout the day. Many people say they don’t have time to do much in the morning. I’d agree. If you stay up late, you will have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. You’ll stumble into the shower and grab a piece of toast and a cup of coffee or tea to slam down just before you leave the house. Then, you do not have the energy and brain power required to take advantage of the most important time of day, the morning.
Here are some tips to go from morning zombie to Ms./Mr. Am-bition:
Go to bed early. A good morning routine starts the night before. Regardless of if you need eight hours of sleep or five, count backward from when you want to wake up and make sure your head is on the pillow in time to get the right amount of sleep for you.
Tell yourself what time you intend to wake up. Verbalizing the time you plan to start your day will set your internal alarm clock, though it doesn’t hurt to set a few additional alarms on your phone too. There is no better way to kick off your day than waking up a few minutes before your alarm clock goes off.
Start your morning with something you can do in a semi-awake state. Making lemon water and grinding coffee are things I can do on auto-pilot. Bet you can too. Sometimes I have to double-check that I have put a coffee filter in the filter holder. A clear indicator that I should think twice before acting throughout the day. Starting your day with activities that require little action allows you to glide into your day.
Read in the morning. Reading in the morning takes advantage of the uncluttered state of your mind. If you read for just 10 minutes every morning, you can read a couple of books a month. That’s more than 20 books a year! Audiobooks and podcasts, which I would include in reading, are also good ways to sharpen your morning mind as well.
Exercise is good if you have time. Exercise gets your blood flowing in the morning, which enlivens you and ensures that your mental, physical, and emotional energy are moving in the same direction. Whether you go to the gym, train at home, or even take a brisk walk, morning exercise is invigorating.
Have breakfast. We have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you don’t believe it; try having a breakfast with protein, veggies, rice or potato, and a beverage. Then, compare your energy and productivity throughout the morning vs. just eating some bread with your coffee, or skipping the morning meal altogether.
And finally, visualize your day. You can do this as you eat breakfast, while you exercise, or on your way to work. Visualizing yourself having success in the activities you plan to do throughout the day will help you prepare for those and increase your chances of success.
A morning routine helps you to have a sense of accomplishment in the morning. It anchors you and provides mental space to effectively prepare for your day. Why not spend a month incorporating a morning routine into your life? You’ll be glad you did.
