Despite being social creatures, we humans are also lonely in other ways. We tend to keep our darkest fears and shame hidden deep inside us like a poison tearing us apart slowly if we leave them unchecked.

Often we hide our feelings and dreams to be compliant and considerate to others, not wanting to be a burden or feel pitted by the people we care about. We develop a people-pleasing personality that leads us to a fake sense of happiness.

We all have something we keep to ourselves, and it would be too painful or shameful to confess to others. An impossible love you had to give up and miss in silence because no one but you could understand, a past mistake you are not proud of, or a painful loss you prefer to keep to you because it hurts to talk about it.

Bring them to the light of our awareness.

Faith is a powerful tool we have for self-development, no matter what our beliefs are. Let’s take a look at this Bible passage.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John‬ ‭1:8–9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We can compare this sin to those unresolved, unmet & disowned things we keep ignored in the darkness of our souls polluting and draining our energy and happiness. We fool ourselves by thinking that burying deep and ignoring the pain we don’t dare to face won’t start rotting our souls inside out.

“If we confess…” not necessary to others but God, the universe, or simply to ourselves, we will purify our souls from the negativity.

Awareness is the first step into a more fulfilling and growth-oriented life. Knowing ourselves is always the starting point to the path of healing.

The first step towards change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.

Nathaniel Branden

Be afraid, be afraid of the pain, be terrified of the mess you could stir inside you while facing all those unresolved businesses. But never let the fear stop you from standing in front of the storm of your pain.

Stand up straight and proud of every decision, every mistake, and every sad or happy memory of a moment that won’t come back even if your legs tremble. Because the amazing person you are today is the constantly changing result of this unpredictable journey called life.
