Ralph Waldo Emerson said we gain the strength of the temptation we resist.
So, if I turn down that third cup of espresso, I’ll be as strong as a caffeine-filled coffee bean?
What an oxymoron!
How could I stay awake without it?
Sorry Ralph, but your transcendental philosophy really sucks!
Backstory
I gave up booze decades ago; giving up nicotine is an ongoing struggle, though I’ve switched to a cheaper brand to save money.
As I pondered what to write for this prompt, the line from the Lord’s Prayer kept popping into my mind “lead us not into temptation”.
When reciting it as a child, I didn’t get it, nor do I now. I respect people’s religious beliefs, but I don’t buy into the doctrine we are born sinners.
The simple pleasures make life worth living — like a cup of coffee — or two or three or more!
