In Islam, lying is considered a sin For a Muslim and telling the Truth is considered a virtue.

Lying is among the sins of the tongue — It is to utter False information while knowing that what one is saying is not the Truth. It is sinful (ḥarām) whether done seriously or jokingly.

Lying Is One Of The Greatest Sins:

A tradition From the Holy Prophet (saw) declares:“Beware I inform you regarding the greatest of the mortal sins: Associating anything with Allah, disobeying parents and lying!”

A similar tradition has been quoted From Imam al-Hasan al-Askari:“All the evils have been locked in a room and its key is lying.”

Lying in Islam is one of the characteristics of the hypocrites, and it is a blameworthy trait which encourages one to commit evil and prevents one From doing good.

How to repent For lying in Islam:

What the one who has lied must do – even if he told a single lie – is repent to Allah, may He be exalted.

At-Tirmidhi:1973 narrated that ‘Aishah said: No characteristic was more hateful to the Messenger of Allah (saw) than lying. If a man told a lie in the presence of the Prophet (saw),he would continue to Feel some unrest in his heart until he knew that the man had repented.

(Classed as sahih by al-Albani in as-Sahihah (2052)

It was narrated from that 'Ali said:"The Messenger of Allah (saw) said: 'Do not tell lies about me, For telling lies about me leads to Hell (Fire)." (Sunan Ibn Majah:31)

Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah(saw) said:"When the slave (of Allah) lies, the angel goes a mile away From him because of the stench of what he has done."Yahya said: "(I asked) 'Abdur-Rahim bin Harun if he approved of it,and he said 'Yes'."(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1972)

Samura bin Jundub relates that the Prophet(saw) said, “I saw (in a dream), two men came to me.” Then the Prophet(saw) narrated the story (saying), “They said, `The person, the one whose cheek you saw being torn away (From the mouth to the ear) was a liar and used to tell lies and the people would report those lies on his authority till they spread all over the world. So he will be punished like that till the day of Ressurrection.`”

So,the point is that — a person who tells lies becomes a Coward and hypocrisy enters his heart and a Believer cannot be a hypocrite and a Coward.

May Allah(swt) protect us From hypocrisy and disbelief and protect our Faith. (Ameen).
