PROMPT CHALLENGE | KNOW THYSELF HEAL THYSELF

Autumn’s Song

The winter that is coming

Photo by Katerina Kerdi on Unsplash

Spring breaks like Monday morning — resistant bud shut tight like a fist. light too bright, pollen, promise, illusion.

I’ve never been a morning person and I see every Monday as Sunday’s untimely assassin.

Can I not sleep in?

I had the same thought when I was born, as I was three weeks late, ten pounds, clearly having second thoughts.

Or was it my Mom who was having second thoughts? She attempted suicide when I was two years old — could I not already sense the melancholy dread of the living?

No, Spring is not my thing. For I was born at night in late Autumn. I fall with the aging failure of things — deepening, darkening earthward.

I drift in the direction of all things living — that is, towards dying.

Not hoping, like some optimistic sales pitch of a young, budding company man with spring in his step looking to lure birds from their nests and turn tight-fisted buds into soft, open blossoming flowers, willing little customers eager to shed their petals like so many dollars and dreams.

But a brooding philosopher who has seen the sad fate of summer’s fresh face and senses the dark arctic blast of the winter that is inexorably coming.

The winter of our karma that is coming for us like a bird of prey — can you feel its eyes on you? do you hear its belly growling?

For all last Spring we planted the seeds of nuclear weapons and made the bed of a cold war; we laughed at the prophecy that Climate Change was coming for us and our children and continued our romance with fossil fuels like fools who thought Summer would last forever.

But I am a Fall baby, and I am here to tell you — winter is coming, winter is definitely coming.
