Autumn hike in the Alps

Fall colors, green pines, and stunning mountain views, above the town of Leysin in Canton de Vaud.

Today was a splendid autumn day, with a blue sky and a powerful sun warmed up the air perfectly for a mountain walk. We went to the high lands above Leysin, which will be covered in snow in a couple of months (another nice state that I will cover on a snowshoe hike) but are currently still fully accessible by foot.

After a beautiful ride up from Aigle with beautiful autumn views like this:

We got to Leysin and immediately left the town and walked up into the woods:

We planned to walk no more than 2–3 hours (we ended up walking 5–6) so we stopped multiple times as we went up to enjoy the views before all this gets white in one single winter storm and until next spring.

After 1–1.5 hs hiking up, we make it to this chalet/restaurant/refuge in Solacyre. We always have lunch here in winter; this time we just relaxed for a while taking some photos of the great views toward the main Alps and then continued walking up:

Continuing the hike up, pine trees suddenly disappear. The yellow grass and the frost on the north sides of the slopes tell us we are in the colder parts of this trail, at around 2000 m.

The last trees are at around 1900 m.a.s.l. Photo by author Luciano Abriata.

All of this will be a snow center in 2 months. You can see some machines getting ready and preparing the slopes.

We slowly start our way back, this time walking all around the top of the mountain.

As you can see here, although there’s no major danger, some parts are not trivial to walk, due to the marked slopes:

Back into the lower forest, we head to the train station. It’s been a beautiful but long hike, and we are tired. We better return home before the sun hides and it all gets cold until tomorrow that a similarly sunny day has been forecasted.
