Autonomous Weapons

About 10 days ago I posted an article about “Black Mirror”, a TV series where each episode shows a near future in which technology has led us to a dystopia. Although is an entertainment product, the scenarios that arise in it can become real, and therefore associations and companies are starting to launch awareness campaigns using the same tone, trying to get the same viral effect.

One of them is “Autonomous Weapons”, a campaign by Stuart Russell, one of the AI scientific leaders of the University of California at Berkeley, along with other scientists.

The purpose of this video is to raise awareness. In addition, they launched this website where you can find more information and formulas to get involved with them. At the end they want to prevent the development of autonomous weapons.

Another recent example with the same purpose was the open letter from Elon Musk (Tesla) and Mustafa Suleyman (Deep Mind) to the UN to ban autonomous weapons. Right now there are already 19 countries that have done so.

What do you think of this initiative? Do you think something like this could happen in the short or mid term? Do you think it is necessary to draw a legal line to avoid this happening? I totally agree with this initiative and with the prohibition of the development of this type of weapons, but I am still worried because AI is popularized and democratized and the cost of the technology in general is dropping (for example drones). If someone wants to replicate what the video show, it would have it pretty easy in the short term…
