Australian Bush Tucker Bites presents Slender Mint (Mentha diemenica).
I chose this plant after reading JM Heatherly’s piece on Spearmint.
Australia actually has a number of mint species. They were used in the early days of colonization but abandoned when exotic species were brought in. Of course, they had been used by Indigenous Australians for tens of thousands of years before that.
Slender Mint can be used like any other mint species and has antioxidant properties with the bonus of being frost-hardy!
This tiny mint species is invasive! It’s marching into our lawn but I love the aroma that fills the air when I tread on it as I go to the garden tap. Under a garden tap is a great place for moisture-loving Mint!
This amazing herb was studied in 2017 as a potential component of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
