Australian Bush Tucker Bites presents Native Lemongrass or Cymbopogon ambiguus.
Despite being relatively easy to grow, I have struggled to get this one established in my garden. I think it’s partly humidity and partly possums! The seed heads are beautifully fluffy and ornamental while the smell is refreshing and brings a spring to one’s step!
It can be substituted for the Asian species of Lemongrass to make delicious curries and other oriental treats.
Just over ten years ago, researchers at Griffith University looked at 30 plant species used as natural medicine by Indigenous Australians.
This species of Native Lemongrass was found to be “as good as aspirin” for headaches and treating inflammation! According to Dr. Grice, the most effective way to consume it is after infusing in boiling water. I drink it as a tea and it’s no chore! It’s lovely hot or iced!
