Summary

Microcosm's 'Rings of Conflict' contest is open for submissions until September 3rd, 2021, inviting writers to create a series of four interconnected stories based on the themes of character versus character, society, environment, and fate.

Abstract

The August 'Rings of Conflict' contest by Microcosm is in its final week, accepting entries until the first prompt of September is published. Writers are challenged to craft a serial story consisting of four separate narratives, each adhering to specific word counts and thematic conflicts. The first story, tagged "Rumble," pits character against character and must be between 300-1,000 words. The second, tagged "Society," involves a character's struggle against societal norms and ranges from 200-1,000 words. The third story, tagged "Blizzard," focuses on the conflict between a character and their environment, with a word count of 100-1,000 words. The final story, tagged "Fate," explores the theme of character versus fate and should be between 50-1,000 words, with the exception of exactly 50 words. The contest offers a $50 prize and encourages participants to engage with Microcosm on Twitter for additional exposure.

Opinions

  • The editors' decision on the contest winners is final and binding, with editors and their pseudonyms ineligible for the prize.
  • Online generators are suggested as a creative tool for writers, though their use is optional.
  • The contest is part of a Serial Fiction challenge, emphasizing the importance of narrative continuity across the four stories, but with a lenient approach to this requirement.
  • The contest aims to foster creativity and idea development among writers, with the added benefit of potential Twitter engagement and follow-backs from MicrocosmPub.
  • Twitter story links serve as friend links for non-members, allowing a broader audience to access the stories.

We are well into the last week of Microcosm’s Rings of Conflict contest. All submissions to the publication until the first prompt of September is published will be included for consideration.

In short, the deadline is 3rd September 2021

The basic contest details are to weave together a serial story, comprising four separate stories.

Character vs Character

e.g. Riff Randell vs Principal Evelyn Togar in Rock’n’Roll High School

Character vs Society

e.g. V vs the United Kingdom in V is for Vendetta

Character vs Environment

e.g. Don Lope vs the jungle in Aguirre, the Wrath of God

Character vs Fate

e.g. the protagonist vs fate in Predestination

Many of the prompts detail online generators. Use them as an aid, or ignore them — it’s your choice. I recommend playing with them, though. I find them a lot of fun, and they help me develop new ideas.

The editors will make the final, unappealable, decision and none of them, including any of their noms de plume, are eligible for the prize.

This contest is a Serial Fiction challenge, and so the stories should flow from one to the other. But we won’t be too tough on this.

Story details

Story 1: Character vs Character

  • 300–1,000 words, with the word count evenly divided by 100
  • tag using “Rumble”

Story 2: Character vs Society

  • Tag this one with “Society”

Story 3: Character vs Environment

  • Tag this one with “Blizzard”

Story 4: Character vs Fate

  • 50–1,000 words, with the word count evenly divided by 100 (except, of course, if you use 50 words exactly)
  • Tag this one with “Fate”

Get your stories in this week, and you will be in the running for the $50 prize (except where prohibited by law, of course).

You know the drill, follow us on Twitter at @MicrocosmPub and make your dog/cat/hamster/husband/wife/friend/me happy. And who knows? We may follow you back. (Yeah, we’ll follow you back. We like you. We really do.)

Also, all Twitter story links work like friend links for non-members.
