August Challenge: Photography Out of My Comfort Zone

Holiday shots and other delights

I’m a bit late to the August challenge, but late is better late than never. I’ve been on holiday, so I delved into photos I brought back to see what fits the August theme. We went to Essex UK, and before that, Suffolk, UK.

Street Art

Here we have street art from Clacton-on-Sea. It’s somewhat spoilt by graffiti, but I thought it was nice anyway. The artwork looks back to the history of the town, with people in Victorian dress, a soldier from WWII, and 1970s scooters.

The graffiti tag across the middle is disrespectful to the artist of the original work, in my opinion. There’s a big difference between artistic talent and attention seeking! I like to photograph murals, because I think they make interesting shots.

Intentional Camera Movement

This photo was taken at Bressingham Steam Museum in Suffolk on another holiday. I was trying to photograph the train running around the track of a model railway.

I wasn’t going for deliberate blur, but I seem to have achieved it, and the effect isn’t bad. I was certainly intending to get the locomotive sharp in the frame. I had my camera on ‘sport’ setting to take a fast shot of a moving object.

Out of Your Element

This challenge was to get uncomfortable. So I’m thinking street photography, or rather, beach photography. Because I’m uncomfortable photographing people, but I noticed that I’d snapped a landscape of the beach while on holiday, and when I zoomed right in, I’d captured quite a nice depiction of what was going on.

These people were actually a long way from me, but this crop of a larger shot struck me as a nice scene, and suitably anonymous.

Portrait of a Friend

Trying to get photos of the guinea pigs can be a challenge because like many animals, they’ll often run off or turn away when you point a camera at them. I’m told by zookeepers that sometimes it’s because they can see their reflection in the lens and it’s uncomfortable for them.

On this occasion, Harry was being friendly, and probably thought food was on offer. It’s not a great technical shot, but it’s one of my favourites.

Monochrome

I was playing around with some HDR software some time ago, and I created some interesting black and white shots, so here’s a favourite. It’s an interior shot of a submarine, which I think was taken at Gosport Submarine Museum in Hampshire.

Those are my submissions for the August Challenge, and I’ll see if I can do a more timely submission for the next one!
