Listening to audiobooks is a great way to fill the time you spend commuting, exercising, or doing chores around the house. If you’re an avid reader, you know how much time and energy it can take to get through a single book.
Audiobooks are a great way to expand the number of books you can get through in a year. I started listening to audiobooks on my Apple Watch in 2018.
I wanted to try something new and unusual. To date, I listened to over 60 audiobooks from Audible.com and Audible Plus.

Now, I realize audiobooks are not for everyone. I wish I could listen to the same audiobook all the time.
The best audiobooks are what I’ve heard several times, including books that have been especially good to me.
There are other ways to listen to audiobooks outside of your phone, such as on your computer, tablet, or smart speaker.
I’ll share my own method of listening.
First, use Spotify or TuneIn to find an audiobook to listen to. You can search for current top picks or listen to the millions of listeners that have found good titles to listen to. Spotify is my personal favorite because it’s easy to use and finds hundreds of audiobooks.
The books you choose have to have a 33% or higher rating on Goodreads. Set your Spotify or TuneIn account to automatically download the audiobook to your device. After you’ve downloaded the audiobook to your device, turn on background downloads.
You’ll be asked to approve the audible.com account information before it’s available to download. You’ll set the background downloads when your device sleeps so it doesn’t disturb you while you sleep. When you have the audiobook downloaded, you can listen to the audio whenever you want. Some audiobooks come with ads, so you’ll need to skip over the ads. To listen to audiobooks without ads, download the Kindle app on your iPhone.
Find audiobooks online, legally for free.
There are two main ways to find free audiobooks online. The first is to use LibriVox. LibriVox is an online library of audiobooks that has thousands of free books available.
All you have to do to access these audiobooks is sign-up for an account and then browse the selection. The second way to find free audiobooks is to go directly to your local library and listen to the audiobooks there.
Both of these could work for you, but which way will probably work best for you? Not sure if you should sign up for LibriVox or use your local library?
Here’s why you should pick the second option. To begin this question, I’m going to answer both ways. But when I say both ways, you are free to do what works best for you.
This not only depends on your personal preferences, but it also depends on how good your music tastes are. For example, suppose your music tastes are pretty chill. In that case, you may want to skip past the audiobooks section at your local library and go to the very first place you hear music.
More ambitious music listeners would go deeper into the library and take advantage of the many free audiobooks. Still, I’ve been known to do that as well.
Certain audiobooks require you to jump through a few more hoops beyond just signing up for an account. I would only recommend doing that if your music tastes and budget align.
Now that you’ve decided the one way you should find audiobooks, it’s time to figure out how to access those audiobooks.
As I mentioned above, LibriVox is an online library of audiobooks, so you’ll need an account to access the library. While you can fine-tune your personal browsing preferences to get the audiobooks you want, LibriVox provides search options so you can find specific titles. You’ll want to utilize these options rather than rely on LibriVox because they will give you more results than the algorithm’s recommendations.

Whether it’s a business book, a biography, or a self-help book, listening to an audiobook is a great way to learn something new. If you hated the idea of reading on a screen, give reading audio a try.
Research indicates that reading a book with good sound quality may be better for your brain. Research has found that the act of reading changes the brain. Good sound quality allows you to focus better on the book. The changes don’t always stop after reading the book; however, your brain will likely benefit from using the book later.
There are many different types of audiobooks. Some are designed for mobile devices and can be downloaded to your device. Some audiobooks are only available to purchase. If you’re looking for a website to download audiobooks for yourself or someone you love, check out Libby.
Libby is an online bookstore that sells books in several different formats. You can find books in ePub, Mobi, PDF, and audiobook formats. You can also purchase books using your PayPal account. Some authors offer Libby as a reading option. Your favorite podcasts are also an excellent choice for finding podcasts.
Some podcasts are available for download, and others are available to watch on your devices. If you prefer listening to podcasts to reading, check out ThisAmericanLife.org. Their podcasts are available in a few different formats.
Some are available as Kindle books, and some can be downloaded to your devices. Your favorite podcast websites also hold some great books. Audible.com is a website and app that offers millions of audiobooks in various categories. There are dozens of different audiobook formats.
On Libby, you can also find a variety of podcasts. Some are available for download, while others are for viewing on your devices.
