Attention Writers: Are You Ignoring the Power of Diverse Reader Backgrounds?

Learn how to captivate them all!

Understanding readers is a fundamental aspect of being an effective writer.

As a writer, your success hinges on your ability to ✔️connect with your audience, ✔️engage their emotions, and ✔️provide a valuable reading experience.

But how can you know what your readers really want? It all begins with getting to know your readers and why they’ve come to your article.

There are actually several ways to find out what your readers want, what they expect to get from reading, and more importantly, how you can write so that readers want to keep on reading!

➡️Conduct Surveys or Polls:

Let’s get right to the point. Ask them! Create surveys or polls to gather direct feedback from your readers.

Ask them about their preferences, interests, and the type of content they would like to see more of. This will provide valuable insights into their specific wants and needs.

That’s something I don’t see a lot of on Medium, but YouTubers use this tool all the time!

➡️Analyze Website Analytics:

We can get all technical, too. Utilize website analytics tools to understand the behavior of your readers.

Examine metrics such as page views, bounce rates, and time spent on different articles or sections. This data can help identify the topics and types of content that resonate most with your audience.

Check your stats regularly and figure out what’s getting attention.

➡️Engage in Social Media Listening:

Talk with other writers and get a big picture on what’s hot and what’s not.

Monitor conversations and discussions related to your niche on social media platforms, but also pay attention to the questions, comments, and discussions happening among your target audience.

This will give you a sense of their interests, concerns, and trending topics.

➡️Read and Respond to Comments:

Engage with your readers by actively reading and responding to comments on your blog or social media posts, or articles written.

Take note of the recurring themes, questions, or requests that arise in the comments section. This can provide valuable insights into the specific areas your readers are interested in.

It can also give you ideas on what to write next!

➡️Analyze Popular Content:

Look at the performance of your previous content.

Identify the articles, blog posts, or videos that have received high engagement, comments, or shares.

This indicates what resonated well with your audience and can guide you in creating similar content in the future.

➡️Engage in Direct Communication:

Interact with your readers through email newsletters, live chats, or online forums.

Encourage them to share their feedback, suggestions, or requests directly with you. This personal interaction can provide valuable insights into their preferences and desires.

You can be as interactive and involved with your audience as you want to!

➡️Keep an Eye on Industry Trends:

Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in your niche. And yes, I did say niche.

Believe me, I have tried it both ways and what I’ve found is: people like having some kind of idea what you generally talk about.

They like variety….but on the same topic.

Monitor industry publications, blogs, and forums to understand what topics and themes are currently popular among readers. This can help you align your content with their current interests.

Remember, understanding your readers is an ongoing process.

Continuously gather feedback, adapt to their evolving preferences, and experiment with different types of content to provide them with what they want.

It’s a symbiotic relationship.

Give them what they want, and you also get rewarded with more readers, who like what you read and give you more views (and well, cash$$$, right?)

You can’t please everyone, but you can get pretty close.
