Well, maybe so, but I say that a word can be worth a thousand dollars — or more.

In fact, I don’t just say that. I know it for a very painful (and expensive) fact. A long, LONG time ago, I was a young salesperson, selling Kirby vacuums. At the time, the Kirby was one of the most expensive (and powerful) vacuums anyone had ever seen. The dealership that I worked for was selling them for a thousand dollars each — and sometimes more. They were really fancy. You know, they had a bunch of gadgets that you could take off and clean your couch, your rugs, your blinds, etc.

As you can imagine, it was not easy selling a vacuum cleaner for $1000. But I came up with a little system that almost guaranteed me a sale whenever I used it. I called it my “Baby Cash System”. You see, whenever I did a sales call at a house that had a baby in it, I was jumping for joy (at least, inwardly).

Whenever there’s a baby in the house, guess which room is usually the cleanest. You’ve got it. The baby’s room.

So, whenever there was a baby in the house, I would ask the mother if I could vacuum the baby’s room. They would all say something like “You won’t find any dirt in there. I keep it super clean.” I would politely say that I understood and ask if I could do it anyway. To prove that they were right, they would always let me do it. Once I was in the baby’s room, I would ask if I could do a quick demonstration with the baby’s mattress. Again, they would always let me do it — mostly because they wanted to prove how clean the baby’s room was. So I would put a dust pad into the detachable head of the vacuum, pull up the sheets on the baby’s mattress and start “sucking” dirt out of the mattress.
