As A Writer, I Aspire To Be Like Patrick Warburton

My Writing Goals: Exhumed from the Actor who is quirky, intelligent, distinct and absolutely everywhere!

Known for his unique distinct deep voice, Patrick Warburton has voiced and acted in hundreds of roles. My kids start watching a new movie on Netflix and there he is again, as a seal this time, my eldest sensed it was him from ‘Emperor’s New Groove’ and Skylanders. We use to exclaim every time, now we go ‘Oh Don’t bother searching it, it’s Prolific Patrick again’, He is everywhere!

You might be confused as to why, as a writer, my aspirations point towards a prolific actor, my theory is writing and acting are both arts, both crafts to learn, practise and perfect, this is why I’ve taken dear Patrick to inspire my writing goals.

A Sophisticated Aloof Gentleman

#Lesson 1: Let an audience be able to find it themselves without spoonfeeding it.

Patrick is quirky, intelligent, distinct and crazy prolific. His unique deep bass-baritone voice stands out, his intelligence seeps in through quirk and comedy and feels like he is everywhere you turn.

#Goal 1:

In writing, I aspire to be uniquely me, to be strange and distinct in how I write, pouring what intelligence I have into my words.

To Infinity and Beyond

#Lesson 2: The greatest risk is really to take no risk at all. You’ve got to go out there, jump off the cliff, and take chances.

As an actor, Patrick has taken many obscure and even bizarre roles in independent films, he takes risks, and openly admits how voiceover work may not make you rich, but he does have a lot of fun. He throws himself off every cliff, over and over, he is prolific because he embraces risk.

#Goal 2:

To embrace the risky business of writing vulnerable pieces and use this passion to throw myself off cliffs I mightn’t have considered, often.

Earnestly Redefine and Reinvent

#Lesson 3: All I try to do is as earnestly and as acutely as I can, conceive a character and try to portray this character just honestly. If the humor is within the absurdity and the awfulness of situations, then let it be seen that way.

Patrick works to understand each character he plays deeply, to bring the fiction to life authentically. His view is that as humans we can constantly be redefining ourselves, learning gives us the opportunity to reinvent ourselves, infinitely moulding our narratives.

#Goal 3:

Focus on learning how to evolve my writing craft, how to express myself more succinctly and earnestly, while being clear on who I am in my writing, authentically weird and authentically me.

Takeaway

Goals:

1. Be me on the page and form a distinct voice as a writer, aiming for my work to take on a voice unique to me.
2. Throw myself off the ‘cliff less jumped’, daily, writing about a plethora of different topics, using a combination of my other goals to become prolific like Patrick.
3. Reading more on writing, taking the lessons in each to action in my writing, using the teaching to become clearer in style and letting my sunshine overflow.
