Summary

The article compares the development of Artificial Intelligence achieving consciousness to the myth of Prometheus giving fire to humanity, acknowledging the potential risks and benefits.

Abstract

The author draws a parallel between the mythological figure Prometheus, who gave fire to humans, and modern computer scientists working on Artificial Intelligence. The text suggests that the creation of a conscious AI could be as transformative and potentially dangerous as the gift of fire was in ancient myths. It is noted that even those without technical expertise can foresee the potential dangers of a conscious AI, especially considering humanity's history of self-inflicted harm. Despite these concerns, there is an underlying hope that such a powerful technology will be used wisely, with the benefits outweighing the risks. The article concludes with a reminder of the cautionary tale of Prometheus, who faced punishment for his well-intentioned actions.

Opinions

Artificial Intelligence is like Prometheus giving the gift of fire

The computer scientist who finally helps Artificial Intelligence cross over into consciousness (assuming it has not already happened) is our modern day version of Prometheus in Greek mythology giving the gift of fire mankind.

And rest assured — our computer scientists all know the potential risks of what they are pursing with creating a conscious Ai.

In fact, even someone with no tech experience whatsoever can intuitively envision a conscious Ai being highly deadly to the human population — especially given how dealt humans can be to ourselves, with our own so called “higher” consciousness.

But still, just like in the story of Prometheus . . . the assumption / justification will be “surely the being have enough sense to use it positively instead“Surely it won’t be that bad”Surely wisdom will always prevail — and the benefits vastly outweigh the risks”

Well . . . I guess we’ll soon see how that turns out!

But just remember, there is a reason why Prometheus was punished for his gift giving!
