Are You Wasting Your Time Writing on Medium?
What type of writer are you: reactive or productive?
If you’re mostly in a reactive state, then you’re probably wasting your time on medium.
I first signed up for the platform because of the amazing amounts of knowledge I could receive. Insights from amazing people around the world. Average people like me. But then you see the partner program, and then the stats, and boom. You forget why you even signed up.
So if you are doing any of these things below, you are wasting your time on here. It’s all about whether you are a reactive or productive member:
Reactive Writer
Checking stats frequently
This is a highly reactive task that many people grow accustomed to — or shall I say addicted to. Schedule a little time a day to check your stats, but constantly checking and checking means you are in a reactive state. This decreases the time you have to be Productive; losing your valuable time to share your incredibly creative mind with the world.
Being too hasty
Being productive requires time and work. Sometimes we become too hasty to finish the productive work so that we may be reactive. For example, we will quickly finish an article so that we can go eat ice cream and watch Netflix. The motivation is on the reactive side, instead of the productive side.
Not being Effective
This ties in with being too hasty.
In the current world:
“We are busy, but not effective. We must learn to be effective.” — T.D. Jakes
What matters the most to u? That is what we should be busy doing. We are extremely busy, but not effective as a species, and this needs to change.
Concentrating on other things
Absolute focus is something we take for granted. To put your whole heart into something compared to putting half of it in whilst dreaming of a taco, will not produce the same results.
“Wherever you go. Go with all your Heart.” — Confucius
Not listening to the heart
We seem to look everywhere — absolutely everywhere! For advice on life, what to do next, how to achieve, and so on. But we never look at the one thing that shines above all.
The Heart.
Have you ever been searching for advice, and deep down, your heart is saying, ‘dude, just get to work, we know what we have to do.’ All the time for me.
“The Brain Thinks. But The Heart Knows.”
Wrong intentions
Writing for money will incite failure. Every successful writer does NOT do it for the money, well at least they did not start out thinking about money. It starts with an idea. An idea to do something good for the world.
Productive Writer
Right Intentions
Writing to contribute positively to humanity should be the primary intention. I believe this is the only way the MUSE reveals itself. When the work is pure.
Writing — a lot
To keep on writing. Write everything. Take notes. Journal in the morning. Work on those drafts. Or simply save titles for future articles you want to work on. This will tell your brain that there is work to be done, pal.
Editing
We want to submit the article as soon as possible. But that one little tweak could make all the difference in the world. The Rule of 3 is a powerful tool in any writer’s arsenal. It is to simply go over and edit each paragraph 3 times before submission. Reading out loud also helps to produce better versions of your drafts.
Full Expression
To be completely and totally yourself when you write is crazy-hard. Sometimes you fear that your writing might look dumb because you are going against the norm. This is a sign that you must do it. If you fear it, walk towards it.
Bruce Lee emphasized the need to stay away from becoming sheep by gluing ourselves to specific styles and ways of thinking. Rather, our success lies in ourselves, even if it means breaking the norm.
Learning and growing
YouTube, Books, Skillshare, etc. It’s all out there. All the information to help you become a better writer. Listen to podcasts, E-Books, and don’t stop using your powerful imagination. This is productivity at its highest level. The best way to get better at writing is to read. Hands down.
I paraphrased this from Sabri Suby’s outstanding book, “Sell like Crazy.”
It is mainly to remind myself not to develop a reactive mindset, but I hope it helps you too.
God Bless!
