Are you still writing with your hands?
Is this a way of making writing more direct?
It appears to me, that many people are changing the way of expressing themselves when writing.
Writing may feel like a special occasion because many don’t to it that often. A special occasion requires a special garment or some super-fancy words.
Too often sentences get too long, impregnated with too many complicated words and unnatural patterns, that interrupt the flow of reading and thoughts. When talking in a casual conversation we speak as we think.
Maybe we are just wasting our energy in the finding of more intricate more sophisticated words. Isn’t it the most straightforward way to just speak?
The idea I had, why not speak instead of writing? So instead of typing words, I began to dictate my thoughts to my phone, directly into the medium editor.
So, this text is entirely “written” without “writing”.
Of course, I had to cut out some unclear phrases and shorten it here and there, but to me, it feels like, that I can bring more ideas to paper when speaking and I do not overthink about what words to use.
The other thing is, even though I learned 10 finger typing, I’m still stopping to find the right words or fancy synonyms, while when speaking I’d describe it in other words.
As a conclusion
I would say that this dictating function is super easy to use and to create the first draft rapidly. The key ideas appear in front of you written down as spoken out.
When I’m somewhere on the go and I have an idea, is used to type it into my phone. Now when dictating it instead, more ideas appear, become visible and I explain them more detailed.
You don’t have to mind strange glances, nowadays it is totally normal to talk to your phone in public.
The point of speaking it out loudly is to bring your thoughts into a different form. I often write about changing one’s perspective this is another example of doing so.
By speaking it out it becomes more visible, more realistic and now also directly translated into words, available for further revision.
You can revise your thought in the same way as you had them some days, weeks or even years ago.
This is my 15th post for the ILLUMINATION 30-day writing challenge by Dr Mehmet Yildiz described in this article. I’m halfway through!
