Are You Still Mimicking Others, or Is That Really Your Writing Voice?

The Fine Line Between Influence and Originality in the Writer’s Journey

LaaLaaLaa, Daadaadaa, Aooaooaoo.

Ladies and gentlemen, how do you like my voice today? Don’t you find it as unique and delightful as a symphony of rare birds singing and dancing together in the morning for their lovers?

My talented fellow writers, it’s time to drink your warm cup of water mixed with a bit of honey. Get your unique voice ready as we perform for new writers and inspire them to follow our steps and find their unique voice and talent.

Although finding your voice is critical to becoming a unique writer, I believe that being a unique writer is a bit overrated. Let’s be frank; we are all influenced by someone else, and most writers, excluding myself, of course, copy each other. 😜

Some nine years ago, I took a private drawing course with one of the Chinese masters, Hua Rui Song. He played a part in designing and drawing some Chinese paper currency. I promised him I would make him globally famous once I became a big shot. (I’m delivering my promise)

Back to the main story, one day, one of my classmates was frustrated as my teacher used to ask us to copy other artists, learn from their styles, and emulate their techniques in our drawings.

One day, out of nowhere, she stood up angrily and screamed, “WHEN WILL I DRAW AND PAINT WITH MY UNIQUE STYLE?”

He said calmly, “Sit down; you have been here for only three months and can barely draw a banana. What unique style are you talking about? Draw a hundred more images and master the basics; then, we can discuss your style.”

Although I agree with my art teacher about mastering the basic principles, such as basic structuring and formatting, I still believe that every person should create to express, not emulate or copy someone else. I was amazed that Chinese art students could draw pretty well at the age of eight; what I disliked about their work was that they all pulled in the same style. I wouldn’t say I liked the lack of diversity in their artistic styles.

Writing should balance mastering the basic principles and rules of writing with adding a touch of your character to make your work sound authentic and personal. I write in the same style as I speak; if you meet me face to face, I will talk to you with the same attitude and voice as I write my articles. My writing reflects my personality. If you wonder why my writing is interesting, it is just because I’m simply an exciting person. 😜

If you are a quiet and deep thinker, write your articles with the same attitude and silent voice. The people who relate to your personality will find your work enjoyable and call you an authentic writer. I am saying this with experience. To be a great writer, you don’t need to copy other people’s voices; I mean, C’mon, God has gifted you one. No?

I tried hard to train ChatGPT to learn my writing voice and copy my tone, but our poor writing mate has limited memory and forgets my style before ending the first sentence. It just has some disorders to using a few cheeky words like hue, orchestra, fabric/ fabric of existence, tapestry symphony, dance, mosaic, ambience, grandeur, beckoned, crescendo, celestial, etc. If you are raising an eyebrow thinking I, too, have used the word “symphony” in my first paragraph, I assure you, it is your very own Nour here! ChatGPT can’t copy my voice; no one can; it is just that sexy and unique! 😜

Don’t write with a generic or robotic voice; don’t lecture or preach to people. Be casual and treat your readers as best friends; talk to them like you have known them for years. Or treat them as a reflection of yourself in the mirror and tell them what secretly goes into your mind.

I don’t really want to make it very long, as I know you are all busy with holidays and New Year’s celebrations… So, for today, that’s enough listening to my sexy voice, dear friends. Now, get up, stand in line, and get ready to sing for us and inspire new writers to find their voice on Medium. Tell them how to communicate through an engaging and authentic tone. What should they focus on while engaging with their audience and crafting a unique message?

Clapping is for a lazy audience; commenting is for champions. Prove you are some of the best writers on the planet “Medium”, by dropping your pearls of wisdom in the comments. Your insights are not just appreciated — they’re needed.
