Not Enough Time? Steps to Increase Your Productivity
Why waking up early could be for you and some tips to get there.
You’re juggling a lot of responsibilities and feel like you don’t have enough time in the day. It’s hard to get everything done when you’re feeling constantly stressed or burnt out.
Everyone seems to have a solution, but come on, everyone’s different.
You’ve probably heard about the CEOs who wake up at 3 am to get more done or work out, but let’s be realistic, that’s pretty tough. However, there is a way that could help your stress levels and extend your day without plotting around in the middle of the night.
An extra hour or two in the morning can relieve some pressure from the daily grind and be beneficial for your mental and physical health.
Some background
I have been waking up at 5 am every morning for over a year. Full disclosure, it’s not because I have the willpower to make this happen. This is because we welcomed a new member to our family last year who seems to wake up the second the sun rises. There’s no better alarm clock than a screaming baby, there’s no snooze…
Once she’s up, she will play, look at her books, listen to some music, or just walk around. Sometimes she likes to read with me, but other times she likes to play on her own.
This is great for me as I can get a lot of work done before some people get out of bed. A lot of my morning distractions are all done before I even get into the office.
While some people might exercise, read, or clean up, I plug away at things instead of letting them pile up.
That works for me.
Getting work done helps me reduce my stress throughout the day. I wrote this article at 5 am, for example.
So, why wake up at 5 am?
There are a lot of reasons to wake up at 5 am. Early mornings are perfect for getting things done or self-care.
Reduce stress levels
Stress harms our lives in many ways. It can make us feel anxious and overwhelmed, and can even lead to physical health problems. Getting up at 5 am may sound daunting, but it can help reduce these stress levels and give you more time to relax.
Waking up early gives you a chance to start your day slowly and peacefully. You can have time to yourself to exercise, meditate, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, read, or just sit and think.
This can help you ease into your day and feel more prepared for what lies ahead. We all know the feeling of waking up after hitting snooze a few times and having to rush to work or get some chores done. The rush and the grind are taxing, and they wear you down.
Starting your day with a calm and relaxed attitude can help set the tone for the rest of the day. You may find that you’re able to better handle stressors as they come up.
Increase your productivity
Waking up early gives you a chance to get a head start on your day and get things done before the rest of the world wakes up.
This extra time can be used to get things done that you wouldn’t have otherwise had time for. For example, you can use this time to answer some emails, do some writing, work on your homework, clean up the house, do laundry, or whatever it is that takes up your time or things you have been putting off.
If you’re not used to waking up early, it may take some time to adjust. But once you do, you’ll be amazed at how much more productive you can be.
Tips on waking up early and staying productive in the morning
Getting up early isn’t for everyone, and it certainly isn’t easy. Here are some tips to help you get started:
- Move your phone or alarm clock across the room and out of reach. You will have to physically get up, which can help avoid hitting the snooze button.
- If possible, remove the snooze button! Easily one of the world’s worst invention.
- Get out of bed and do something as soon as you wake up so that you don’t fall back asleep.
- Try gradually moving your wake-up time earlier by 15 minutes each day until you reach your goal.
- Use a diffuser with an essential oil like lemon or peppermint to help you stay awake and focused.
- Drink a big glass of water right away. You would be surprised how dehydrated your body becomes overnight. A colleague of mine recommended this, and it changed my life. I have so much more energy now and feel amazing.
- Drink a cup of coffee or tea to help you get going.
- Make a to-do list for the day so that you can stay on track.
- Start working on your most important task first so that you can get it out of the way. You could also get all of those little things done as well.
- Take breaks every 20 minutes or so to avoid burning out.
- Get up and move around for a few minutes every hour to keep your energy up.
- Make sure to have a healthy breakfast to fuel your body and mind for the day ahead.
Give it a try
First and foremost, make sure you are getting enough rest and listen to your body.
If you tend to go to bed at 1 am, after only a couple of hours of sleep will be tough. It’s a lifestyle and things need to work harmoniously together. I generally go to be before 10 pm to make sure I get enough sleep. I know others who go to bed earlier (and later) and still wake up at the same time. It’s a personal thing.
Also, 5 am is just when I get up, but that doesn’t mean that 4, 6, or 7 might work better for you. The point is that you’re leaving yourself enough time to do something to improve your physical and mental health.
Waking up at 5 am may seem impossible, but the benefits far outweigh the initial struggle. By gaining an extra hour or two in the morning, you can reduce stress levels, increase productivity, and get more out of your day. Give it a try for a week and see how you feel!
